The conventional wisdom is always that it's better to get a potential employer to give a number first. Then you've got a point to negotiate from. In reality it's not always that simple. If you really needed a job, and you were hired, you accomplished your main goal. It's possible you could have negotiated for more, but it's also possible they could have thought you asked for too much and you might not have gotten the job.
Yeah I agree, probably better for them to give you a number!
I always try to say that I'm negotiable so they say a number first. I hate feeling like I'm lowballing myself. But remember, it's a negotiation. You can always change your mind and say you did some market research if you feel you initially gave them a number that was too low.
That’s a good idea!
You always have to ask what is the competitive rate in budget for this role?
That’s a good point!

You can always counter with the question of what the range is for this role. When they give a number, give the top of the range and say you’re willing to negotiate. I usually just give my number first, I always overshoot what I’d be willing to accept. They will surely try to negotiate you down, so it’s best to give a higher number
I’ll do that next time! Don’t wanna get less than what they’d give!

It’s usually better to get their range first so you have context. Once you give a number too low, it’s hard to recover. Next time, I’d try to deflect politely until you know what they’re offering, then respond confidently within that range.
Think I’d agree with you on that one!
