Coach
Average ads on TV back then were better than anything that wins at Cannes today.

Why does it hold up? I mean the juxtaposition is fun, but the concept feels not entirely grounded.
In what way does it not feel grounded to you?
I’d say it’s extremely grounded in a variety of ways.
Setting
At a narrative-level, this ad is set in a time and place that’s recognizable and familiar to pretty much every audience, literally grounding it in their reality.
Insight
There’s a very real human insight here. We’ve all had birds fly into our windows. And many (most?) of us worry about checking because we don’t want to see a dead/dying animal.
Target
As the network’s initial kid audience grew up and headed off to college at the start of the new millennium, CN found that many of these young adults were still watching the station, particularly for toonami. It’s why they launched adult swim in 2001. This ad is trying to capitalize on the halo effect of this audience also watching some of the network’s more self-aware all-audience programs.
Secondary Target
This is a little more of a guess, but I think an educated one. CN’s growing anime offerings at the time were almost certainly resulting in the growth of their Black audience. The black community has a long history of anime fandom (feel free to look it up). This ad feels like it’s trying to draw the teen/young adult portion of that audience beyond their Toonami/Adult Swim viewing and into the stations broader programming.
I’ll grant you that making it a :60 feels a little unnecessary by today’s standards, but the only way to make it more grounded would be to cover it in dirt.
This as is only remembered by 2 people: its creator and you - and you're the same person!
I 100% remember this ad. That makes 3!
