This is a pretty heated topic with fellow officers and we're divided on it so I want to know - do you believe schools would be better if teachers were armed. Almost no one agrees with me they would, and my stipulation is that they'd need significant training.

NOOOO. Arming teachers could actually increase the risk of gun violence, either through accidental shootings or through the potential for escalation in a volatile situation. Also, the presence of armed teachers could negatively impact the learning environment and create a culture of fear and mistrust. Lastly, teachers should not be expected to take on the additional responsibility of serving as armed guards.

Definitely not. Anyone that thinks teachers should be armed is delusional. If you think they should be armed, you have no idea what it's like in the majority of schools. We're not talking about low stress $50k a year private schools.

like

From a statistical perspective, this is a terrible idea. The very low base rate of occurrence of targeted violence means the usefulness of guns won’t even be recognized. The increase in accidents and suicides will greatly outweigh the benefit.

smart

Arming Teachers would add an unstable element to an already critical situation especially since SROs can’t seem to understand their job functions and although they serve a legitimate purpose how many times have we seen SROs who are trained and certified peace officers end up on the news in a bad light for using force on a student in a situation that didn’t really call for it?

like

I absolutely do not think it would be better. I just saw an article about a six year old finding their teacher's gun in the bathroom. Imagine what how bad that could've been

like

I don’t think that would be smart because a Teacher is not put through the type of intervention training an officer is put through and you would introduce a gun into an environment that could create unintentional incidents. I think there should be more resource officers on campus.

i say yes...having armed teachers could serve as a deterrent to potential shooters and reduce response times in the event of an attack. Schools are "soft targets" and having trained, armed personnel on campus could help to prevent attacks. Also I live in a rural area where law enforcement response times may be longer, so having armed teachers could be a necessary safety measure.

As a former police officer and Infantryman before that, I can’t imagine the tension in the classroom that having a gun would create. Teachers chose that profession to educate, not create harm. There’s already too many guns, more guns will never be the answer.

like

No it just will add fuel to the fire. You don't know what someone is going through and how they will use it

I say yes as long as they are trained properly and stored properly. If
An active Shooter knows
There are guns In the school
But Doesn’t know Where
They are, they will likely pick
A softer target—one Without guns. How many children have been shot in school from an accidental discharge? Compare it to the number of children shot by active shooters. Active Shooters won’t even enter a school that he or she knows has several weapons. They will Simply attack the school without weapons. Fact.

1st - Armed teachers isn’t a thing, that’s why we haven’t seen more accidents. Increase the number of guns in schools, accidents will increase.
2nd - You’re making a massive assumption about perpetrators of targeted violence. Virginia Tech, Parkland, Buffalo, all these shooters knew they would encounter lethal force. You must change the narrative in your mind. These attackers aren’t crazy maniacs who don’t have a plan. These shooters are cold and calculating predators who have made a DECISION to act. They know guns will be present, they are prepared to die. More guns will make things worse, not better.

No, definitely not! When officers enter a school in response to an active shooter, and they encounter an armed subject, they don’t have time to stop and verify the armed subject is a teacher, not the shooter. Maybe in instances where the school is very rural and there are no SROs and police response time is longer than normal.
