Sydney is a beautiful city - I moved back here (I was born in Sydney) after 8 years in London after our son was born because I don’t think there is anywhere in the world like it for lifestyle and for safety. I have also lived in the US - Arkansas of all places - and whilst Sydney doesn’t have the charm of southern hospitality and can be a bit cliquey, it has generally warm and friendly people, the food is fantastic and fresh and I find options are lot more healthier than what I found when I was in the US (although that was Arkansas so keep that in mind lol). The lifestyle with kids is incomparable to anywhere else I personally have experienced - beaches, parks, even in winter you generally can get out to the park or have some outside time in the winter sun. I will say though is lifestyle here is expensive - a lot more expensive than the US… housing, food, utilities.. you want to be on a good income… especially if your wife doesn’t work. Another important thing to keep in mind is where you will live - Sydney is huge and spread out - closer to the beaches is obviously more expensive… schooling (especially day care) is extremely expensive and if you want to send your kid to a public school you want to be in a good area/catchment - private schools here are extremely expensive as well. happy to answer any questions!
The short answer is yes, living in Sydney or indeed anywhere in Australia is different from living in the US!
These range from the obvious -- the climate, politics, etc will be different -- to the subtler differences in culture. For example, by and large Australians tend not to be hugely interested in politics, especially not their own. (They take a little more interest in US politics since it tends to have global implications.). Voting is compulsory (citizens are fined if they don't vote) and perhaps this is one reason voting is considered a "grudge" activity.
Generally Australians are a harder drinking group than Americans. Drinking age starts at 18, and it's very common for people to gather at the pub after work and if it's a Friday may drink to excess.
I think it's a sportier culture than the US as well. By this I mean people are very interested not only in watching sport but often also participate in team sports, cycling etc well into middle and older ages.
Australians feel that they have a very hardworking lifestyle but I think there is greater work-life balance. It's quite common for people to take the month of January off to camp or do other summer activities. Easter is another big time for family get-togethers.
I could start another long thread about the differences between Sydney and Melbourne or other Australian cities, but feel free to shoot any questions.
