Thoughts on joining a legal AI startup? Currently in house at a large public after leaving big law as a 4th year. Have been at my current company for about 6 months now, and while I’m learning a lot, I don’t really like the company culture and think I’m underpaid for the hours I’m putting in. An opportunity recently came up to join a well known legal AI startup with a great team. What is the general consensus on this career move?

Biz dev just means sales. You are going to be cold-messaging people on LinkedIn and email.

which one - huge difference between legal ai tool vs AI foundational llm

I wouldn't touch one of those roles with a 10 ft pole

Yeah I am inclined to agree. AI is a bubble. Recipe for disaster being a cost center in an AI start up.

Business development at a place like that = sales. If that’s what you want then go for it!

Key point. You’re basically pivoting to a career in tech sales. Sales can pay well if you’re good at it and/or get lucky, but don’t have very attractive long term career prospects imo, other than more sales. And I know it’s a sunk cost, but if I’m going to pivot to an industry that doesn’t need my legal degree, I would want to feel really good about it.

For additional context, this is for a non-legal business development role.

Completely up to you but coming from someone that did that move recently it is a different role - you either like it or you don’t. I went from a contracts officer role to a tech transfer office role at a uni (basically helped find opportunities to sell researchers IP in a relevant market) and although transferable skills you lose a lot of your contract drafting, negotiating and advising skills. I lasted 3 months before I called quits, I just couldn’t do it. Now I’m in house in commercial contracts where I do everything mentioned earlier except for BD 😅

Echoing that this is a sales position. If that’s what you want, go for it, but I wouldn’t unless I was desperate to leave the practice of law.

Starting a new position in a few weeks and have an opportunity to speak with my future boss before starting. Is there anything I should ask before starting that wouldn’t already have been covered in the interview? I was thinking about asking if I should read up on anything before starting, but I also don’t want to impose obligations on myself if I don’t have to. Fwiw going from firm to in-house. TIA!

Outside counsel has been prepping company witnesses for a trial in August. It is my subject area so I am supervising outside counsel. I did not, however, choose the counsel. He is doing a really awful job. Co counsel is better, but not great either. Higher ups love the firm… I do not want to micromanage, but I have genuine concerns about outside counsel’s ability to try this case. Trials are rare, and I just don’t think these guys have actually tried many cases. Cont. below…

What’s the Best tool/material/resource you’ve developed for the business to support them ?

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

Got a temp offer for less than a year without promise of turning into full-time. Wanted to know what ppl think about temp jobs (looks bad on resume if I don't turn full-time later within the company?) and what comp should look like (e.g. 1.2× of regular comp?).

Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.
