Hey there 👋 Contracts Manager here, can't say this applies for every company but contracts managers in many companies do attorney-level work (negotating, redlining, reviewing contracts) but without the commensurate pay. Some companies (facebook, etc.) have their 'procurement' department staffed full of experienced attorneys who are termed contracts managers. Not sure if their equity and bonuses are on par with the general legal department. At Axiom, contracts managers are subbed in for positions where the company did not want to pay 20 hrs a week for a barred attorney but instead wanted 40 hrs of coverage from a contracts manager doing approximately the same thing. Once a contracts manager at Axiom becomes an attorney, their billable rate with the client changes and they are no longer classified as legal support but instead become legal talent. The rate increases sharply as well. Personally, I think it's better to aim for counsel in a company, rather than being a contracts manager if you have the choice. Many times contracts managers are seated in procurement rather than legal. Not all the time, but just things to think about.
Hey AA1, if you don't mind, how were you able to get out of the contract manager role?
