Start by writing the headlines of the deck. Storyboard everything on paper first. Write headlines of each page, then sketch. Rearrange, then start making slides.
I don’t let my teams start on decks until we agree to an outline in word (key messages for pages, objective, content)
I swear by this method as well. Although I still end up with a graveyard... I need to get to M1's level.
Icons. Just throw icons everywhere. Make a decent deck with a logical flow, smart art it up, then just throw icons on it aggressively.

If you are looking for good graphics / design generally cool stuff. I’ve found that those that have been out of college for about 1.5 years and have been doing slide duty the whole time are pretty awesome. I’ve put together the content and some ideas around diagrams, charts, etc and am impressed with their ideas and quality - not to mention I have improved my own skills.
Are you suggesting that people out of college 1.5 years are good at slides?
