To all associates whose firms haven’t announced special bonuses (or have strict requirements for them that you don’t meet): Are you planning to leave? How mad are you?

I would have left had they not announced them. I started to look two days before they announced, but stopped right after the announcement. I am not bothered by the requirements.

like

Absolutely will be leaving if they don’t match at this point. If firms are going to match, they need to do it soon or it will be too late.

like

My firm hasn’t matched and I doubt they will by now...

like

If my firm didn’t match then I would leave. The lateral market is 🔥 right now (as the constant recruiter calls keep reminding me). Any firm that doesn’t match will just be left with the associates who CAN’T leave.

like

My firm did match, but I would have stayed anyway because I am a junior associate so my bonus isn't all that big anyway and because I've put a lot of work into building my reputation, relationships, and work flow at my current firm. If I was more senior and the bonus is some serious $$$... maybe my analysis would be different.

Curious P1, have you and your fellow partners discussed this?

A little. As you probably know, most partners don’t have much say in these decisions. People I have talked to are on board with them. We want to stay competitive for good talent and can’t afford to lose people.

Recently received an offer from Ogletree to do only class action work. It'll be a big change for me, I'll be starting as a fourth year. Double my current salary, etc.

What will this be like? It's more of a niche, but lucrative, part of their practice, right? Will I really get good WLB like they claim? I have a nice 40 hour a week job right now, no billables.

How do you get good at thinking on your feet? I find I always need time to think and analyse before being able to answer client queries (even those that are considered simple by others). I don't want to rush and get it wrong. I avoid phone calls for this reason which isn't great when you're in the service industry so it's starting to impact my career.
