Those who love comics? Or skateboarding? Or cars? Or role games? Or pottery? It’s just something you love without an effort or a bigger plan. It involves creativity, storytelling, smart thinking, problem solving…everything together makes it interesting and not so difficult to love. People live and breath many things. For some of us it’s advertising. Personally I do not like anything related to it as a job but I really love it as a game. That’s how I see it.
I like this perspective a lot.
It’s a way to get handsomely paid while still creating art. It’s barely art, and it’s sell-out art, but it’s still art. Other types of art either pay really low or have a million-to-one odds of success.
Exactly. I make a lot more designing in advertising consistently, than I would trying to sell my paintings every 5 months

Literally not your cup of tea. Bigger question is why you're bothered by other people enjoying what they do? The exit door is always open.
SC2 I smoke weed, b. I’m also not bothered, I’m just really curious as to why people love it so much. I also love it. But not like others. Get it? I’m not throwing shade on those who do.
I dunno. Ask a Brazilian.

It’s different when winning awards means you can leave Brazil and go to the US or Europe. It’s your ticket out, in many ways. Brazil is great btw, not hating.
Because if you’re gonna do something, do it all the way.

Always loved commercials and business so its a perfect combo for me.
I think when you’re a junior, it’s the only way to get thru working all those hours.
It’s like a cult. You gotta believe in it.
Then you get paid more, don’t have to work as hard and get better assignments.
And you get your life back.
That’s what it was for me. And yeah, fuck advertising! 😂 It’s just my paycheck.
Don’t necessarily “live or breath it,” but I got into it because of Mad Men (I know - don’t judge me). When I was in college, I really liked the industry and after watching the show, wanted to be in it even more. But honestly, it’s a cool industry. You could have it much worse or much better, but I like it since you get to work on lots of interesting projects, or meet cool people.
So true. And hey, no judgement. Mad Men is a great drama, probably my favorite ever.
Same reason Heisenberg made meth. I was good at it, and it made me feel alive
As someone who’s just starting out, right now I’m living and breathing advertising to get better at the craft and to go further. But, I suppose if i ever had a family, I would dial it back and not live and breath it. Idk, I heard in a podcast that in the beginning of your career, you should grind and then focus on work life balance later.
Life has improved dramatically for me ever since I realized it’s just a job.
someone said that in order to succeed in this biz you need to follow it like you follow sports
I’ve found this to be true.
There’s a good intersection of working with or being creative, work/life, and a reasonable living that I find appealing in advertising.
People laugh at the hours and grind but industries that pay more require higher education/skill (eg law, finance) or significantly more hours (eg consulting).
