LA is like 10 cities in one, definitely scout out neighborhoods and see where you like. Try to make your commute as short as possible too.

Get rid of most of your shit. Sell it, buy new stuff over there. Pack one week before you think you should start packing, you have more stuff than you think.
I’ve heard “sell everything and buy new” a lot. I’m not opposed to it, but never understood the reasoning? It seems wildly expensive and time consuming, no? Saves on the packing and transporting I guess.
Watch out for your face mask hiding bad odors in the apts you check out. Also, fiction podcasts make long drives really fun. Like a book on tape, but much more theatrical and immersive.

I'm getting ready to make a similar move to SF. OP, let me know what you eff up on your move so I can make different mistakes. Deal?

I did a similar move a few years back. My tip, don’t move earlier than your wife, forcing her to have to pack up everything herself. Seriously, I came back East to host a going away party with her and am still sad at the sight of all our packed up shit in our apartment when I came back. Poor woman put in a ton of work. But I digress.
Stay in different Airbnb’s in diff goods. 3 days at a time for like 2 weeks. It’ll be a little expensive but you’ll know where you want to live.

How is the dog getting there ? You driving ?
I would make a housing recon trip or stay in temp housing if you don’t know the area.

Are you asking specifically about moving to LA or just moving in general?
Take the least stuff with you. Sell everything and buy all new.
LA has so many people who come and go it is very easy to find an apt with month to month lease terms. May want to start with something like that until you get a feel for it and the part of LA you really want to live in. And commutes are nuts, so research actual commute times before committing to any longer term lease. If most cities are like "20 miles, that isn't too bad!" LA is nothing like that. You need to be smart to avoid living in your car.
