Today (day 99 with my employer) I was put on a performance improvement plan. Such a shit show of a company! After the offer, and before my start date the company reorganized the department… new boss and department reporting structure. Too late for me to renegotiate, and my job at my former employer was not a fallback option. On day 3 one of the only long term employees in the department accepted a different job. Sooo many red flags! I need to jump but I don’t have anywhere to land.

I don’t argue that I’m not performing as well as I could be, but my manager relied heavily on other people’s feedback because she has NO idea what is going on in my area first hand. Zero communication or coaching and then straight to PIP based on the feedback of one jaded man who can’t get promoted because he doesn’t have a degree. And I stood up for him to get the promotion anyway! I can’t stand the boy’s club crap.

I would say the flags are all there! Find something else and get out asap before it gets worse. Sounds like you never had a chance here. Do yourself the favor and start looking around l.

I would say try to find something remote to increase your options. If I can help, please let me know. Sounds like you have a good skill set and need a good fit. These folks are just keeping uou down.

Oh bummer! Start looking at other options and give yourself a bit of time to review what YOUR standards are for you and if you're hitting them. Bad companies tend to not know where the problem really is and throw people under busses, but at the same time people often underestimate what they might have been able to improve, which is a tough pill to swallow but worth doing. I'm sure it's the company's fault here but at least you can stand confident in what you really do bring to the table by reviewing yourself.

I’m sure I can improve there. I was prepared to advocate for myself and the company but lost my cool when the PIP came at me. The biggest issue I have is that I’m literally doing grunt work 90% of my day. I’m doing the same work as people in the department who are paid 40% what I make. Everyone involved should question a company that is hiring engineers with master’s degrees and giving them entry level tasks. I could just keep my mouth shut and cash the checks, but I’d rather be working on tasks more appropriate for my pay scale. My attempt at pointing out the financial and business benefits of hiring a lower skilled person to allow the higher level people to do higher level work was not taken well. She decided to put me on a plan because I was not happy that she expects me to do low level work for the next year. I’m “not a team player”. I’m literally working with an ERP system that is nearly as old as I am that runs with a terminal emulator on my pc. They have a good in demand product, with a $2 billion dollar backlog, but if they treat their strategic new hires this way, and long time employees are jumping ship like it’s going down, management has some tough days ahead.

Oh man, yeah definitely sounds like it's time to move on. Don't be discouraged in the meantime, sometimes there's a side path here and there on the bigger path.

Does anyone work at a firm where legal assistants don't do legal assistant things? For example, I have to do my scheduling and calendaring. I have to upload documents to our file management system. This morning, a name partners assistant didn't realize the name partner had a depo and didn't confirm it. This is how this firm as been for decades and it's incredibly frustrating to work this way. It's so hard to not stress over this daily.
