Hi all. I am trying to determine if I am being compensated fairly. I am a tax manager (about to start my second year as manager) and have been with EY since staff 1. I was promoted to manager in June 2020 (during covid) and received a 7.5% raise. The class above me has mentioned they received much higher raises during their promotion years. My base salary is now approx. 97K. Any insights would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Damn man/girl check your privilege
Don’t know about privileged. May be it is about exercising one’s choice
I feel you OP! Forget the haters.
Truth. Who’s being an idiot? I’ll start. You.
Uncalled for. You have no idea what his/her situation is.
To clarify, I'm working my ass off. This is a crisis of conscience. The pandemic has made me realize that most of what we do is meaningless and serves greed. The flip side is that the products and services we support are necessary for life in 2020. But we don't create anything. It's smoke and mirrors. I want to do more.
I appreciate this POV. It’s how I’ve always felt too honestly about a lot of industries (I started in industry, then consulting and have since moved on to strategy work w a nonprofit doing work in the developing world). It has only been a short time in the role outside of consulting but it truly has been a lot more interesting and fulfilling
I am waiting for a package so I can walk off. I can do other things with my life
I take that
How would you have survived or have you built up enough savings?
Could easily live for a year to 18 months barring any unforeseen disasters. It's the unforeseen disasters that keep me here.
My friend is making more on unemployment than they were at their job, and she’s just furloughed so she gets benefits. Quite a nice life she has now
This kind of situation is actually an unintended consequence of the additional unemployment $. I have roots in manufacturing, and most of the US manufacturers are very worried about staffing their production for the summer (busy time for some industries). The line workers make more on the new unemployment amount than they do working (because it applies about $600 additional across the board regardless of min wage in that state or COL). So there may be a labor shortage when the economy does open again. I’m sure the WH didn’t think about that piece - I think it’s good to help the country w more unemployment $ but the equation for handing it out always has to be carefully thought through so it doesn’t disincentivize work. In this case, it’s going to have negative impact on American manufacturing companies, something I don’t think Trump intended
I got hired the week california I went Into lockdown after being a stay at home dad the last 2.5 years. My wife is a Dr whose hours have been cut by 50% so it was good timing. Sort of wish I was still just focused on home but happy to have the mental stimulation during this time
I know y’all are giving OP a hard time, but more people than we think would take a package for a variety of reasons. Especially if they have savings and can survive the next year or more. I don’t necessarily agree, but if companies are going to start doing layoffs it’s not unheard of to ask for volunteers. It may give those that need their job a chance to stay employed.
How good do you think these packages are? I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re less than a month pay
What sort of severance are you assuming with this statement OP?
I’ve been laid off twice in my career but it was at a time when the economy was doing relatively good I was able to get another job right away. I don’t think that would be the case here and I know you’re only looking at the immediate future but it’s gonna take a while for the economy to recover and you’ll be months if not years behind your peers in terms of experience.
Personally, I go back and forth if I would want to be laid off.
It does sound nice in the short term to not have to try to work during lockdown at home (I’m having a tough time working well at home for weeks on end) but long term I like my job and want to keep it so even though my instant gratification self is sort of interested in a lay-off, my real self wants to stay where I am. However this is only because I like my job. If I were at my last consulting gig, I would be raising my hand for sure
Me
Personally I live with crippling anxiety every day that a layoff is coming. The stress almost isn't worth it but then I look at my friends who actually have been laid off and feel ungrateful.
why are you worried?
I'm so grateful EY has not laid off their employees. What an awesome Firm.
