Ugh I just found a coop I’m in love with and would likely qualify for. Please tell me all of the reasons and rules why I should not do it lol

If you ever need to get out of your lease for any reason they have a lease break fee AND they keep your security deposit. It’s a money suck

Co-ops aren’t bad. They have some interesting facets about them but they shouldn’t be avoided unless you have a reason to not want in.

I mean it can be annoying to get through the process but plenty of people live in them are are doing just fine

Depends greatly on their co-op and their board. I live in a sponsor unit of a co-op right now and the rules are perfectly reasonable and differ very little from any apartment building I’ve lived in, but I know that other co-ops can have much more particular rules. Upside of living in a co-op (renting or owning) is that since all the owners have a stake in the whole building, they tend to be well maintained and cared for.

Moving to NYC from DC. I had planned to come up for a weekend or two to tour apartments. When would be the best time? I thought about a month ahead of needing to move - and then coming back a weekend or two later - would make sense. But I am seeing so many listings on StreetEasy that say the unit is available immediately. Any advice? I have a cat so trying to avoid moving into a temporary Airbnb in between to apartment hunt, as I’ve seen some people suggest.
