Nice!
My understanding is that the union negotiation had more to do with the non-drivers being fairly compensated and having decent working conditions. Sometimes we forget a whole lot of people have to do a lot of physically demanding and exhaustive work in order for us to receive the final product.
find it amusing that people in this bowl are up in arms about anyone but them getting a raise.
Firstly , to be a driver , you need to be working on site job at ups for several years. We have posts here about people making 500 K to 1 mil.
Secondly, unlike making slides or writing code sitting in AC rooms, it is physically and mentally demanding job (I know most here believe that they can do their job easy).
Finally, it takes them strikes and haggling to get a raise. This is first such raise for decades while most here whine about getting less than 10% raise or bonus every year.
Kinda amusing that people who make the most are upset about essential workers getting a raise. Says a lot.
Yeah, anyone with a knee flex "hur dur, unions back" reaction to this kind of news clearly doesn't understand how unions work, the history of labor unions in reforming/changing labor laws, and how capitalism requires checks and balances between wholly unfettered "shareholder value" based decisions/corporate actions and actual human, quality of life issues. I for one don't want to live in a world of nothing but Amazon like delivery and logistics functions where drivers and warehouse labor are treated like robots, have to pee in bottles, and still struggle to make ends meet.
all I'm saying is instead of questioning or being dismissive I think it's okay to sit back and appreciate someone else's victory sometimes, like good for them
don't think too hard about it y'all
I don't know where OP is getting $170,000 in salary and $50,000 in benefits.
From the article:
"UPS CEO Carol Tomé said on an earnings call this week that full-time drivers would earn about $170,000 annually in salary and benefits"
They are currently averaging $95,000 with $50,000 in benefits for full time drivers. So the actual change over 5 years will be from $145,000 to $170,000 in combined salary and benefits. That's about 17% increase over 5 years.
So 3.2% annual increases for the next 5 years….
Instead of asking why UPS drivers are making $150k/year, you should be asking why you aren’t.
Hint: It’s because they have a union and you do not.
Nah it’s bc you’re an account supervisor
Everyone in here tripping is a hater. Good for them. Drink up that Haterade folks
Stupid. Time to stop using UPS and we’ll nip this problem in the bud
Some folks are just beyond clapping for others. If you’re not saving lives, your job is pretty irrelevant to someone else as well.
Great work negotiating, Teamsters!
Shipping costs will increase dramatically and that impacts everyone. I'm not saying these drivers, and warehouse workers are getting essentials (e.g., A/C), just something to be mindful of.
The market will figure it out
UPS CEO Carol Tomé said on an earnings call this week that full-time drivers would earn about $170,000 annually in salary and benefits by the end of the five-year period. These drivers currently earn, on average, about $95,000 a year with a further $50,000 in benefits.
