How much would upgrade cost paying only cash?

I’m not sure where the 24 hours comes into play. Are you thinking you may get an offer for an upgrade on the app?
Also, this wouldn’t impact the Africa leg since it won’t be AA marketed and operated. You would need to look at this chart since you’ll have a BA flight and also need a full fare ticket -

You can upgrade the NA to London ticket using this chart (still 25k+$550). The upgrade would not include the Africa leg -

Your best bet is to see the cost to make your ticket a full fare economy and then use the first chart I posted. So the fare difference plus 35k miles.
I called about upgrading to a full fare ticket and they want $8k per ticket 😱
25k miles is a steal. Go for it.
It’s the $550 on top of that that feels like they are stealing from me lol.
Even with the $550, seems worth it. That is a LONG flight.

AA doesn’t do Y to PE (at least not published) only Y to J on their own metal.
I would just try to rack up American Airlines miles through credit card bonuses, rebook your flight with a business award (they always have availability - I’m flying Q-suites on Qatar through AA to SA next year - been delayed for two now).
Biz on AA is 70 or 75k each way, economy is still 45k I think. So you could do two bonuses and hit an economy and business one way and it gives you flexibility to position your flights out of JNB or CPT
I’m trying my hardest on the bonuses but AA doesn’t have many CC transfer partners. And I need 2 first class tickets so it’s a stretch. Qatar is not even showing up as an option for NY to NBO, only British airlines 😔
