Wanted to ask some veterans here. I am considering joining the Army as an officer, what are some potential important reasons I SHOULDN'T join.

Because your job will always have to come before your life, your boss will have legal authority over you, and there is an immense amount of silliness and wasted time (less as an officer than enlisted, but still a lot) that words can’t do justice.

likesmart

Yeah you can’t quit a shitty boss or refuse an assignment (as long as it’s legal). You are giving control of your life away to an entity and people who don’t care what you have going on personally.

Because you should enlist and go SOF. Just don’t fail, and damn sure don’t quit.

Source: Me, it was the absolute best decision I’ve ever made. B-school and consulting get me paid way more now, but that was the coolest job I ever had or will have. Also, outside of being a fighter pilot, which is officer specific, the enlisted side of SOF is the coolest thing you can get out of the military. Or as a Warrant *pilot* in 160th, but even they start on the enlisted side more times than not.

SOF is cool but that’s for athletes only - and it still only paid M2 in shelled peanuts

As a prior Navy sailor, go to the air force

Well…if you’re gonna destroy your body and mental health may as well be officer. As crappy as time in can be. I’m beyond thankful I did. Gave me perspective on life, grew me up, paid for my education. Amazing experiences and friends made. It’s a love hate relationship. You’ll hate all the stupid bs and miserable times but miss the job and the people

Do you value any of your current relationships? You'll lose those.

watch out for Jody

have u also considered FFL, op?

FFL is for people without better options. Pay is crap, treatment is crap, and they are used for the worst missions. Not most dangerous…the worst.

like

Don’t do it! Especially if you’re older. It’s not worth the time taken from you or the 98% of shitty leadership you’ll deal with. But you will learn a lot about what your made of.

Also, Enlisting would be just flat out stupid if you already have a degree

like

The pay, and constant moving. Officers make far more than enlisted. Married make far more than single.

Don’t join if you want to have any control over where you live. You can get stationed in awesome places like Germany and some less cool places like rural NM. I left AD because I wanted to have some control of where I live.

1. Army
3. Army
....Yeah thats about it ;-D

For those of you who got out at 10, do you wish that you rode it out to 20? I’m at a crossroad and I’m not sure what to do. Have some active/reserve time, wrapping up graduate school, and am now considering either a) come back to the business world or b) go active and retire before 50 and live off a nice pension. Obviously there are draws to both. I’m an officer for what it’s worth so I can realistically retire at O-5, MAYBE O-6.

Perspective. I’m retiring from the service and I’ve positioned myself decently to be competitive. I have a graduate degree pursuing a doctorate, LSSBB, ScrumMaster, SPHR, and PMI-ACP. I’ve been offered two positions that are great and on the human capital team. For someone in this situation where should I be looking as commensurate with my certifications and experience?

I'm seeing a meme float around on facebook today regarding VA payments for anthrax shot related issues if it came from the squalene laced lots the FDA identified. Any truth to it? I'm skeptical.

To all the post-9/11 veterans, it’s a somber day that unites us all in the reason we fought. It’s easy to forget - especially with the younger generation having 9/11 be a history lesson rather than something they lived through. The waters became muddy with two wars and politicians, but you all stepped up and did your duty. Thank you all for your service, it’s an honor whether we crossed paths or not.

Wondering when if anyone else felt similar and decided to pull back and do something more relaxing. What was the catalyst, what are you doing, and are you enjoying it?

I'd considered taking up a 9-5 somewhere but not sure if thatd wear off fast.

I am currently renting and my lease is not up until October 2021, however I found a good deal on a home and scheduled to close in June 2021.

My landlord will not work with me to end the lease early, so it looks like I will have to double up on rent and mortgage through the summer.

If I went on active duty orders, can I use those orders to break my lease early without penalty?
