Was recently laid off ~1 month ago as a Senior Analyst in M&A. I'm finding it extremely hard to find a job. At this point, I've pretty much exhausted all my leads. I've applied to 250 jobs in IB, FP&A, Strategy, and Corp Dev. I've also applied to every relevant role headhunters have sent me. In total, I've only had 1st round interviews for ~15 companies, a lot of which ghost me after finding out I was laid off. I'm at my breaking point. What do I do? I have bills to pay and no family support.

I’m sorry to hear about your situation. It’s clear that you’re doing everything you can. Being laid off is a challenging and often disheartening experience:

1. First and foremost, recognize that applying to 250 jobs and getting 15 first-round interviews in a month is a significant effort. This shows your determination and resilience, which are important qualities that will eventually be recognized by the right employer.

2. Network More Broadly: Continue leveraging your network and reach out to former colleagues, mentors, and industry contacts. Sometimes opportunities come from the least expected places. Attend industry events, webinars, and networking groups to increase your visibility.

3. Seek Support: Even though you mentioned you don’t have family support, consider reaching out to friends, professional groups, or online communities. There are many professionals who have been in your shoes and can offer advice, support, or even job leads.

4. Skill Development:*Use this time to further enhance your skills. Consider short courses or certifications relevant to the roles you’re targeting. This not only adds to your resume but also shows prospective employers your commitment to continuous learning.

5. Stay Positive and Persistent: It’s natural to feel discouraged, but try to stay positive. Each application and interview is a step closer to finding the right opportunity. Reflect on each interview experience to understand what went well and what could be improved.

6. Financial Management: If you haven’t already, consider creating a detailed budget to manage your expenses tightly. Look into any temporary relief measures, such as unemployment benefits, that might be available to help alleviate immediate financial pressure.

7. Consider Temporary Roles: While continuing your search for your desired roles, you might also look into temporary or contract positions. These can provide financial relief and potentially open doors to permanent opportunities.

Remember, your worth is not defined by your current situation. The right opportunity will come your way. Keep believing in yourself and continue pushing forward.

1) Stick with it. It’s a numbers game and you’re only 1 month out. Keep applying.
2) In the interim, to close the gap on your resume, try doing some CFO-type consulting work for a start-up. 3) If you can mock interview with someone or record yourself, try scrutinizing your delivery. 15 first rounds and zero second rounds may be an indication of some lacking in your behaviorals or technicals.

It’s a tough market, don’t be too hard on yourself.

I’d say get out of IB and pivot to either risk or even compliance. Pay will be significantly reduced but at least you’ll earn something.

Go and stay with your fam or someone who supports you! Try junior level roles!

Really? How do we make this happen?

Why are they taking ad laid off a negative? Seems weird, good people get laid off for no reason and seen it happen lots of times. They ain't to blame and more the previous employer.

like

I asked my recruiter the same question but she basically said they had candidates who are in an IB seat that is looking to lateral versus you, who is laid off so given a very tricky market, employers have the right to be picky…though they ganged up to make decisions to over hire then mass lay off. Sounds like a game to me.

like

Definitely a tough market. Be positive. I am praying for you, friend!

Keep your head up, we’ve had a lot of turn over at the associate level finding Corp dev jobs past few months so the job market is getting back to being busy. What city are you in? Are you in a smaller city vs NYC where there may be more opportunities?

like

Yes, I am in NYC and targeting roles in the city.

I am in financial services and trying to get out of sales. I am emphasizing my abilities as a trainer. Do a reverse look up. What roles are available? Engineer your resume to suit that role. No need to outright lie. You have skills you are overlooking that someone else will value. Look outside your industry and see what translates there as well. I've changed industries multiple times. Don't have desperation breath at interviews. I know it's hard when you are struggling. Put on positive music and listen to motivational podcasts and movies. Keep your chin up!

like

Apply to roles across the country in high growth regions such as DFW, Nashville, Miami, Houston, etc. Be open to relocating. Also try to applying to equity research and credit research and investor relations roles. Something is bound to come your way.

like

I’m sorry man. Keep your head up. Your hard work will pay off. I wish you luck!

I am so sorry to hear that OP. I have been looking for a new role as well and getting absolutely no calls back. It seems like the job market is really tough right now. You might try posting in the job referral bowl as well as that can often be a good place to get some leads. Best of luck to you.

It’s a bit to soon to write off those 15 companies that interviewed you. They are still meeting with other candidates. Process can take months.

Change your C.V. , get letters of recommendation and submit those with your application, complete LinkedIn courses and get people to confirm your skills. If you want it you can get it, chase it!

Currently scheduling “on sites” for a S&O role in CA. My referrer said they can hire as L5 or L6. Would like to land in the L6 bucket as I’ve heard 5 --> 6 is one of the more challenging promotions.

I’m looking for info on what the real difference is in responsibilities (manager vs IC, cross functional vs focused, etc) so I can focus on checking the L6 boxes during my interviews.

I’m also curious about whether this is something that I should just discuss with my recruiter directly?

Some say it's much tougher to do so under CA law but wonder if anyone has any insights. Banks won't likely care about analyst signing bonuses, but associate bonus at EB with diversity bonus can be significant. If she quits before, she won't be going to another bank.
