We all know the usual paths - IB to PE, banking to corp dev, etc.. But are they really the best options? I’ve been hearing more about family offices, niche credit funds, even finance roles in sports and entertainment. Honestly, the idea of working in a less traditional space but still making good money is sounding more appealing. Has anyone taken an ‘off-the-beaten-path’ finance job and still cashed out? Worth it, or do you just end up making less for the same grind?

300k at 30yrs old, work 8:30-4:30. Enjoying work life balance, family time, work success with plenty of room to grow still, and have the best team beside me. Asset management has the balance between stability, decent comp, great hours, it’s a fantastic option.

I had no guidance when I joined this industry, didn’t attend a top school that financial companies recruited at, I missed all the deadlines to apply for good internships, and didn’t have friends or family who knew the ropes or had connections, so I took a very nontraditional route and ended up in a front office role after some time. Prime brokerage is a decent place to be, and there are multiple career paths within the field.

I made the jump from IB to a family office, and honestly, no regrets. Still solid pay, way better work-life balance, and I actually get to think long-term instead of just grinding deals. Niche funds and alt-finance roles can pay well, you just have to find the right fit.

I’ve definitely thought about this too. The more traditional paths can feel limiting sometimes. Family offices and niche funds seem to offer a lot of upside, especially if you're looking for something unique but still lucrative. I’ve heard mixed things, some love the flexibility and culture, others miss the big bucks. What’s your ideal balance?

I prefer start-ups or boutique firms over large corporations.

Ehh I made $3 million last year due to carry. Currently on partner track at Mega Fund PE. Expected to make $10m+ as partner. The lifestyle I live is impossible with a mere $200k salary. Don’t get me wrong, that is still good money if you jsut want a comfortable life, but for my interests, more is required. My kids go to the best private schools money can buy, and we always fly private or first class.

My SO adds very little to our relationship. She has a dead end job. I cook. I work. I oversee finances. I plan trips. She doesn’t have a voice in the relationship. I’ve asked her to give her perspective but she always defaults to mine bc she thinks I’m smarter/worldly. She feels intimated by me and my social circle. Lately, I’ve found myself thinking for her. Anticipating her wants and needs and then adjusting my behavior to meet them. Which she appreciates but it’s frustrating 29M 27F

At times, having a wife with Borderline Personality Disorder sucks more than people can imagine. All the gaslighting, claims of hurt, screaming and false accusations based on imagined threats make me want to scream back “you have the mental illness, not me.” But the good and fun times can be extremely good and fun. Sometimes I wonder how I got into this.

Additional Posts in Jobs in Finance

Hi everyone, I'm new to Canada and want to start my career here in the Financial and Banking industry. I have passed the CFA level 2 exam and was wondering if I have to complete the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) as most of the job postings here mention about it. I saw that if someone passes at least the CFA level 1 exam then the requirement of CSC is exempted. Can anyone enlighten me about this? As the CSC exam costs above 1000 CAD, I wanted to be sure if I need it before investing behind it.

Just found out that end of the year I will be promoted from analyst directly to VP and since it’s such a large jump I’ll be the lowest paid VP in asset management at only $135k TC. Should I stay it out and wait for TC to align or take the promotion and jump ship bc I will likely get paid more elsewhere given how recruiters/other companies eat up hiring recently promoted ppl from other firms?
