I never understood it, personally. It’s a lot to ask of the body.
Money profit before……….all else
I don’t think it’s “glamorous”, working three 12s. It’s easier for the hospital, that’s why they do it. So first they dog us out mandating 12 hour shifts then they understaff which means we’re doing the work of 2 people. It’s a big win for them. But four 8-hour shifts? That’s 32 hours, shaving another 4 hours off a 40 hour week. I’m sure salaries would go down as well and since that’s a point of contention already (low wages) I don’t think that would fly. It would also increase the need for more staff which is another point we’re always bringing up. Hospitals already are short staffed. Hospitals run on 2 shifts now. Cutting hours would necessarily need to be staffed in more than 2 shifts. I’d imagine if anything they’d go to five 8-hour shifts so hospitals would run on 3 shifts. But still, they’d need more staff. They don’t want to staff properly now, I don’t think they’ll change. But seriously if you want less hours in a shift maybe school nurse, clinic nurse, office nurse, something like that is more your cup of tea.
Agreed. I don't think cutting hours back to 32 hours/week in an economy where 40 hours/week is the norm is the solution here. OP sounds like they just need a higher paying, less stressful career😬
12 hours today and tomorrow 10am-10pm DSP-HitInc
I liked working 3-12's when I did, however the issue wasn't the 12 hours. Rather that staff:patient ratios were too high and sometimes when someone called off we were assigned additional patients if coverage wasn't found. Also, often 12 hours became 14 hours because I could never get to all my documentation during my shift. I also was often asked to cover part of the overnight shift if someone called off so it really ran way over 12 hrs. Then when working 3-12's in a row it would take a full day to recover but the hospital never failed to always start calling each morning I was off about 0500 trying to cover shifts. I would run around the house screaming "Don't answer the phone!" to my family and hoping they heard me in time. Working only 3-12's would have been ok but unfortunately it was everything else that went with them that made them difficult.
