I'm also in the Deep South. I went from working in an on-site role in my mid-size city to a fully-remote role for an employer 2,000 miles away. My salary tripled. Not sure what industry you're in, but I am in tech now and was in something very, very not-tech before. The struggle for me was realizing how undervalued I am locally and that the salary I have now is commensurate with my skills and experience. It was almost impossible for me to believe that I am "worth" a salary that is in line with the market value for what I'm doing. You may actually be pursuing jobs that are below what's appropriate for you. Look for a company where a large number of their employees work remotely and roles are exclusively remote, as opposed to employers who are simply open to considering a remote hire but would prefer a local candidate. Good luck!
Please remember that even if you can do your job from anywhere, doesn’t mean your company can do business anywhere. They aren’t just being nosy about where you live. Companies have to register in each state (and for some states, each locality) that they have employees working in. They have to pay taxes and do regulatory reporting in those places based on those tax jurisdictions’ laws. Some are quarterly, some are monthly, some are a combination of both. After all, each state has their own income tax rules and they all want their money. This can add up to a lot of overhead and companies may decide it’s not worth it to register in a new tax jurisdiction for just one or two employees. And that’s just for payroll.
