What is work-life balance like in big tech legal? I’m currently in house at a large multinational; I like my job and I get paid fine, with a very good WLB (40-45 hrs). I want to look into FAANG-type opportunities as they would mean a huge pay bump, and I think I’m qualified, but I have no idea about the hours, and I don’t want to substantially give up WLB, as that’s why I left BigLaw. I don’t want to be miserable again. I know Amazon is poorly reputed for lawyer WLB… what about other places?

Job 1: 85k at small boutique firm (3 attorneys). Standard benefits but no 401k. Semi-annual raises. No billable hour requirement and regular 40 hour week. Being groomed to be a partner on a 2-3 year track.

Job 2: 135k at large regional firm (200 attorneys) good benefits. 1900 billable hours requirement. Partner track is 6-8 years but not guaranteed.

Does anyone have experience working for a ALSP? How does compensation work (pay and benefits)? Are you an employee or technically an IC? Do you have billable requirements like at a firm? Pros and cons of taking a class year cut? Partner sees my potential and that there’s an actual evolution but I’m not there yet in terms of experience compared to my peers so he told me to at least consider a class year cut.
