We had a partner once who, when you were on thin ice, would give out your number to recruiters.
Thankfully those days are gone, and we are more open and honest. Also, the expectations have become clearer. Some warning signs (at least at my firm):
1) Consistently missing performance metrics (particularly utilization) without a good story as to why...this will automatically put you at risk
2) Failure to get promoted (more than a year behind peers)
3) On bench and nobody reaching out, either to staff or to pull into reinvestment work
4) No “real” relationship with a partner/MD/director
I guess those are really risk factors more than signs. Only sure sign is when you get a meeting invite for the next day w partner and HR...at that point start playing taps on the bugle. But—at least here we are running super hot and are performing well, so don’t worry about forced actions just yet.
Also curious. This week my Deloitte ID card stopped working. When I emailed security they said that someone must have accidentally disabled my building access and that they’d turn it back on for me. Spooky.
You can call them and ask “Am I at risk” and they don’t squirm. And, more ideally, they’ll have called you and said “Hey, you’re at risk, you need to do x”.
Believe it or not these things don’t happen at a spur of the moment. I always feel bad when people are surprised (most aren’t), because it means nobody cared enough to sit them down.
Being on a performance improvement plan. Lord knows those damn things take forever.
Passive aggressive firing, lol
Describe what real relationship means? I have struggled with that in the past.
Pick me, pick me
I don’t have a real relationship with a partner or MD and it concerns me. I’m 2 years in and am close to SMs but not higher—I’ve figured it’s because they’re busy, but I worry it means they’ve decided I’m not worth investing in. Thoughts?

Have you tried building a relationship? They are indeed quite busy but will also receprocate if you show interest. Must come from you though.
