What are some tactful ways to find out how much associates at a firm work without sounding lazy? Hoping to make a move that allows for better WLB

Wait for the offer then reach out to people and ask about billable expectations

I asked what percentage of associates in the group/office met the bonus minimum and framed as wanting to know there was enough to go around.

likesmarthelpful

I would ask about average utilization. If people are routinely hitting well above 100%, that's probably not the WLB you want. By contrast, if people are in the 75% and below range, it probably means there's not enough work to go around. Great WLB aside, that's a good recipe for stealth cuts and not long-term stability.

You could ask about billable requirements. If a firm has multiple hours tracks or flexible arrangements, they’ll brag about it.

Hello,

I’ll be done with my masters in Medical Biotechnology in December and have done my bachelors in pharmaceutical sciences.

I am mainly working with shops in the States as a non-native speaker and I am constantly worried about my ability to communicate (in any professional occasion but mostly in meetings). I am working with some of the best shops and this makes the situation worse considering that I am largely surrounded by an extremely competent group of folks that are super good at any form of communication. How do you feel as a native speaker when you meet non-natives? Should they be worried, or, they doing ok?

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

First year associate and I may barely hit 1500 this year. Requirement is 2000, though i know first and some second years at my firm don’t hit it.

I am a in a small specialist group who has 2 partners, and they both give me work. One of them said to not worry about my hours (though they do not know how low of a number i’m projected for). Haven’t asked the other.

Should I be concerned?
