Please rescue! I have three and they are hands down the best dogs I have ever had. Save a life!!! If you want a particular breed find a breed specific rescue in your area. They have one for every breed you can think of. Facebook is the fastest way to find them in your area.
Please rescue if you can. Rescues are more loving and desperate to please too, it’s heartbreaking.
Do you mean a rescue when you say “other options”?
A breeder (a good one) will give you a known quantity (I recognize this is a generalization). Meaning you know the parents, their temperament, their history, other puppies from one or both of the parents, and medical needs or history for that breed.
There is a risk that breeders are not good of course, and over breed their dogs.
They also cost a pretty penny to both buy and for their first puppy year (speuter and vaccinations)
A rescue you don’t know any of this (you can get the Health DNA kits to help!). But you’re saving some sweet pup who needs your love and a home.
They also cost much less to adopt and come vaccinated and speutered unlike a breeder pup.
Pet store puppies are usually puppy mill puppies. Please avoid at all costs 😢
^^ yes! I was going to go the breeder route since it was my first dog, but it requires some research and possible wait list if the breed is super popular. In the end I went rescue to save money and couldn’t be happier with the dog I got! But I personally don’t see anything wrong with going to a good breeder
I personally sent the AKC registered route because I liked having the peace of mind that I had something showing what type of dog I have (I’ve seen horror stories of dogs being taken away bc they look like pits...don’t get me started on this I think pits are sweethearts and i love them; some areas have bans though). I also appreciated knowing the history since the breed I have has a higher likelihood for hip dysplasia.
Just a small add but can we please not bash on people that didn’t adopt in a bowl about loving dogs? If breeder puppies don’t get purchased, they will most likely end up in a shelter too so if someone can afford it and wants to buy from a breeder...that is their business. I just am happy when any dog gets to have a home.
I know of two shelters where friends had to return them because of aggressive tendencies that came out later. One spent at least $3k on medication, a behavioralist, and a professional trainer but had to return him when he would go berserk when wearing a muzzle (bit another dog and bit someone). Another returned his dog because she got overprotective.
Basically there are bad shelter stories if you’re notadopting a puppy - you don’t know the dogs history and different breeds are prone to specific temperaments. I find nothing wrong in valuing a lazy relaxed bulldog over an active shepherd for example if it suits a specific lifestyle.
Nothing wrong with reputable breeders if you don’t want to risk not knowing a dog’s history (though I will say there are plenty of happy stories so definitely not against adopting).
Nothing honestly. We did and nothing special. They give you paper work to register the dog but unless you want to bread them it doesn't matter.
Visual Storyteller
Exactly. Depending on the breed or mix you want, the different tests they run are more important. For example, when I got my goldendoodle, the breeder had the parents hips tested and a certificate showing they were healthy. Goldendoodles are prone to hip dysplasia.
I’d say rescue or breeder. If your other options include a pet store or place that sources from puppy mills/backyard breeders you may get defects and health problems. There is nothing that guarantees you won’t get those from a breeder-purebreds are more prone to issues and rescues are a mixed bag. I have a rescue mix and a rescue purebred - that was the right choice for me. My mom has breeder purebreds and has some health issues they developed...you just never know. Do your research and good luck!
