What practice do you want and why?

I got along very well with the funds partners at my firm and I thought it was what I wanted. Just hasn’t shaken up that way.

Interested in hearing what you hate about funds besides the exit options. I know some people interested in switching to funds because of the (relative) WLB and opportunities available.

Funds is the best transactional practice area in biglaw, IMO. In terms of lifestyle, and interesting substantive work. You might just be at the wrong firm.

Due to obvious conditions my comp for the calendar year (salary+bonus) is back to 2017 levels although my overall sales are more than double and 1/3 less total comp than last year. It seems like comp opportunity is always decreasing during good times (I get it) but when it comes to adjusting during bad times, nothing was done. Is this normal for industry sales?

What are the best investment books or authors for beginners? What are the best podcasts, YouTube channels or bloggers to follow? What are your favorite stock trading platforms? And if you finally have six figures cash ready to invest, what's the best place to start? Which broker / financial advisor would you recommend? This is only for 3-5 years to ultimately buy a decent home for my family.

I'm clearly a dummy so any help is greatly appreciated.

Why are lawyers less friendly as colleagues than non-lawyers? I’ve worked both in-house and in firms and noticed lawyers tend to ignore each other. Compared to the multiple corporate events and initiatives that was quite a choc when I realized people in BL just come to the office, sit down, work and leave without even trying to have a conversation.

Any insight on Brewer (either office, generally curious about the firm). I assume comp after year 1 is discretionary, rather than lock-step, given the size of the firm. Would appreciate happiness, horror stories, of whatever “firm culture” falls between the two. DM me if you don’t want to share publicly.

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.
