I can tell you what I wish they did!
I wish they invested in me outside of raises and happy hours. For example, training/education, conferences, industry opportunities, and even speaking engagements (both for us and with us)!
I wish there were more internal incentives, maybe recognition for small accomplishments or rewards of extra time off for larger accomplishments.
I wish the idea of “were all in this together” was weaved into the culture more. Instead of an us vs them mentality. I think this is especially relevant to you as an account director. Just because you’re not a creative doesn’t mean it’s not your job to sell the ideas and protect the creative integrity. I’ve seen too many account people say “the client doesn’t like green” instead of actively participating in the creative process as an idea the TEAM has built.
I wish my MANAGERS wanted to be trained better at being managers.
I wish each employee had a clear growth plan that involves career goals as well as PERSONAL goals.
I wish we went on more trips as a company. I’m not talking weekend trust falls...I’m talking afternoon museum trips or movie outings. For socialization and inspiration.
That would have kept me around.
Reading this, I realize not only how good we have it checking all these boxes, but also how little employees value that we do and take it for granted. It’s never enough.
Provide budget for coaching and true personal exploration and development. Need to hide out in the woods for a month and try to compose Phish songs? Do it. Need to leave at 3pm today to throw your toddler on your shoulders and walk them to a park? Do it. Need to spend 1 hour a week exploring what brings you sufficient energy in your work day? Do it.
Some agencies do, at least the 3 I’ve worked at have all offered sabbaticals for X years of working there
Honestly to me it’s pretty straightforward. To keep people happy give them responsibilities trust them Don’t micro manage. Allow them to work remotely. Don’t overwork them. Pay them a fair wage. And be nice
Work life balance. I’ll settle for all the other bullshit that comes with working at an agency as long I don’t have to deal with it until 11 each night.
I wish they valued women in creative leadership as much as they talked about saying they did
My boss is smart, empathetic, graceful, kind, cares about my health. I'll be loyal forever.
(Or...until he stops being all those things or leaves)
I can imagine. I don’t think I’ve had that.
You also don’t hear enough about people reacting to that kind of leadership the way you put it. Which says a lot about you, so kudos to you
I am yet to find an agency that takes care of their people and inspire them to stay and do great work.
I think 40% is the agency and what the organization can do but the other 60% is up to people on positions of leadership to take care of their teams and inspire them
don't tell me about all the great benefits to only have to make me jump every hoop to get them.
Working entirely remote.
Autonomy, autonomy, autonomy.
