Advertising does not deserve the privilege of influencing your life choices.
So happy I had a second kid.
It’s so challenging and hard, but so rewarding watching them grow up together.
A constant reminder of what’s more important in my life than work.
And I’ve found new depths to love and commitment to my family I didn’t think possible beyond what I felt after kid 1.
Hearing them make each other laugh makes it all worth it.
I’ve never talked to anybody who has regretted having a child, no matter what their circumstances were.
I have seven. And it’s because of advertising. Everyone needs a hobby outside of work
It’s very hard to see past the early years of parenting when you’re watching and attending to your kids 100% of the time. When they get older, the game changes completely and they become more self sufficient and independent, even in small ways that make a big difference . Advertising as we know it won’t be around much longer—it’s already changed and will continue to change in ways you can predict. Kids get easier, life gets harder, parenting gets different and they need you differently. Build the life you want with the family you want. Don’t give advertising that much power. You have no idea where your life will take you
The second kid can keep the first kid company all those hours you’re at work. (Seriously, I have two kids and you just figure it out. Two is great. But don’t have three; you’ll have to buy a minivan.)
From a time management / work-life balance perspective, going from zero to one (having to get home for the nanny, juggling parent-teacher and client meetings, etc.) was much more of a significant change than going from one to two. Don’t get me wrong, juggling two kids is hard AF, but it makes more of a difference in terms of finding personal time (when you and your spouse both have to be “on duty” during all non-work tones) than being able to work.
I love my sister and I'm so grateful to have had her growing up, but now trying to plan out having a family with my husband and one kid just seems so much easier on every level.
(That’s all I have time to write :)
Sadly everyone I know who has kids says they love them more than anything but wouldn’t do it again. I think the second makes freelance impossible from what I can tell.
I literally just found out my wife is pregnant with kid 1. I’ve never been so scared. I can’t imagine 2. But mentally I’ve decided to put being a father above advertising no matter what. I just don’t know what that means I’m supposed to do
Louis CK has a bit about having a second kid. He says having kid number two is like if you’re drowning, and somebody throws you a baby.
I don’t have kids and my feelings towards CK are now complicated but I still laugh enough at that joke to share it here. Whatever you decide, good luck!
I think that choice should be about what you want your family to be vs advertising. We had a second a couple years ago. It’s absolutely harder than one, and you have to repeat stuff that you may have JUST finished (like potty training or sleeping through the night). Don’t regret it for a second. I didn’t find it impacted my work as the departure and arrival times for me are the same with two. Initially harder to log back on in evenings.
Definitely don’t regret it but it is hard AF. But we manage somehow. All the principles we learn as we take on working parenthood apply times 10 and the tagteaming with spouse is better bc there are two. But making time for self and spouse is scarce and hard. Wouldn’t change a thing but I do wish it were easier. The industry is much more understanding especially specific teams. Helps to be surrounded by colleagues who are in similar boats or have been through it
No regrets at all. Having two is a challenge — especially as they get older and have activities. Two things helped me manage work/life: being selective about my travel and deciding to live in the city so that I could make it to school events, conferences, etc. Having a strong support system at work helps, too.
That said, I think it’s also helpful to always remember you are doing the absolute best you can, especially on the days when you feel you’re failing on all fronts.
@SP 1, my kids are 2.5 years apart. I think that was a pretty good space between because you can talk a 2.5 year old off a ledge. They kind of can start to process that babies need a little more attention. Kind of. 😂
Pretty close to it, but who cares. Kids are infinitely greater than advertising. Obviously
@ACD2 that was Jim Gaffigan and he was talking about what it's like when you have your 4th kid, not 2! That man has 4 children... hilarious bit tho. Highly recommend.
does the age difference between your kids make it easier or harder? I have one, but want a second...
