Person of color is a good term when speaking broadly of issues concerning, well, people of color. Specific terms are good when talking about individuals or people of the same group. So educators of color is a great title for this bowl, while individually, I’m a black educator
Which is then when you should specify using the term “black, “ “Mexican,” “Indian,” and so forth. As mentioned above I also think educators of color encompass all non-white teachers who can relate to being non-white and while may not have all the same experiences that go into specifics we all share the same experience of being an educator of color and can relate to that.
I would like to point out that Black isn't the only POC, I feel like it just often forgotten that POC means minority, Asians and Hispanics are POC as well.
I use person of color and my ethnicity (Filipino American) to challenge white supremacy. If I get referred to as non-white, we’re gonna have some problems.
I prefer to be called black, but my husband came across a seemingly safe way to ask others about their color. We ask about their heritage and it leads into open conversations.
I think the question here is how do others feel about the term. Other "people of color" dont identify with the term so readily as we may and when its said, they assume the speaker is referring to a black person. I often am offended by the term because it is used so negatively in the media. With a group like this it is more positive so this is better.
“Black” is good for me. My kids this year asked, “Yeah, but where were you born?” 😁
Individually, I prefer black. When speaking of broader issues, people of color may be more appropriate... depending on the topic.
I'm black. No one ever refers to me according to my ethnicity anyway. Ironically, I have found that my students think I am "mixed" (which I'm sure I am, but I have no idea with what)
I’m black. Married to a first generation Indian American. This relationship has proven that those terms mean different things. When it’s time to be specific, I think it’s extremely important to do so
I identify myself as Black.
Person of color is just broad, including anyone that’s not white.
POC reminds me of “my black friend”, though.
I prefer to just be black. I think my experience as a black woman is different from an Arab man or woman, for example. Also, they wouldn't readily relate to me simply because we are both not Anglo Saxons.
I prefer to be called Black but the reality is that you are a person of “color” if you are anything but white.
The black experience is America is unique and I like to recognize that fact, so I prefer that designation.
People of color is too broad a classification.
