My wife often calls me by 5:45/6 to ask where I am if I’m not headed home yet. Sometimes she’s stressed with kids/dogs/dinner and really wants me home. This really throws off my concentration because it makes me feel rushed. Like many practices sometimes I’m out at 5:30, other times it’s much later. Just depends and is unpredictable. Any advice on how to approach this?

Try texting her at 4:30 to advise her as to your ETA.

Good advice. If I communicate with her like I did with my clients we’ll be golden haha

likefunny

I second that. You can avoid this by communicating before she’ll call you and letting her know an approximate time you’ll be home at. If the approximate time becomes a lot later then let her know again. If she’s stressed with kids/dogs/ dinner then you need to figure out how you can also assist- whether that’s figuring out a couple days per week to maybe come home a bit earlier or letting her have some time on the weekend to relax also.

Or both

This is an easy fix- like others have said- text your wife to let her know when you expect you’ll be wrapping up for the day.

I had exactly the same issue and got into just letting my teams know that I’d be out of pocket at 5:30 and available like a normal employee as soon as I got home (which you can at least fake while hanging out with kids). That’s actually how I discovered that my firm didn’t care about face time. Did end up pulling a metric ton of late nights to get everything done, but it was better than having a perpetually stressed out spouse.

Only way for me to be promoted and stay in safety is to jump to the business side but I’m hesitant to give up doing legal work.

How many married professionals with young families are just sticking it out “for the kids”? Marriage is very dead and has been for a while. Young kids 4 and 1. My wife and I don’t fight, but share 0 interests outside of the kids and can’t stand to be around each other. I’m so ready to leave… I just can’t bear the thought of doing it to my children even though another part of me feels like wife and I would both be better parents if our lives were separate. Fourth-year associate. I will soon be commuting to Midtown Manhattan to a firm that pays market. From a financial perspective, am I completely nuts to be driving in and parking? Between tolls and parking, it’s going to be close to $10K a year as opposed to the bus/train being between $2500-$3000 a year. Thing is, bus/rail is pretty reliable in the morning (in terms of availability of options), but if I’m working late service gets dodgy and I like the freedom of having my own vehicle (cont.)
