What do you all think about going from commercial consulting to the federal practice I'm considering switching over

Come to Deloitte. Because you can still work on/contribute to commercial work when you want to. We don't have a big wall between federal and commercial practices like accenture, PWC, and IBM do since our commercial practice is US based.

like

If you're thinking AFS then I'd say prepare for a possible drop off in the talent and work ethic that you'll be surrounded by. If you're just over consulting and want a cushy gig then there are plenty of options in fed. It can be frustrating and boring AF. But work life balance is great.

like

Work life balance is better but there are a lot of lame projects (think staff aug and feeling like you're outsourced staff doing bullshit like PMO and reporting), sloowwwww clients (mentally and organizationally), and a slightly draconian culture (military culture is found across the govt, patriarchal, creativity and innovation aren't as valued as following orders and sticking to the old way of doing things). But you can find good work if you look. Just don't pigeonhole yourself in federal so when you leave you aren't stuck working in govt forever. That's why I picked Deloitte for federal.

like

Deloitte's up or out timeframes are the same across industries- including federal and commercial.

K1- not sure how to answer that. I can't really separate the "fed culture" from the "commercial culture" for you because they're way too intertwined to really make a distinction. It's really an industry designation and cost center to which each practitioner is assigned and that isn't enough of a chasm to create a culture difference. No distinctive "fed culture" anymore than there are distinctive cultures in C&IP, TMT, Healthcare, etc...

like

They are in some ways and aren't in others. The federal practice is very big, but it's not a separate legal entity. We all go to the same DU at the same times, use the same Shared Services in the same way at the same level and have the same access to the same resources, networking opportunities, quals, etc... We can also work on commercial work intermittently if we are federal (not sure the other way around). "Federal practitioners"/"federal practice" refers to an industry designation and a cost center assignment. As federal practitioners we have to report our time daily and have some extra compliance training to go through but it's not like it is at ACN, PWC, IBM, and KPMG.

like

Deloitte has this "one Deloitte" initiative that encourages collaboration between industries, functions, and (when possible) member firms (Deloitte US, Deloitte UK, Deloitte Global/DTTL). There is also an effort in federal to realign our service lines and capability offerings to closely align with commercial so we can share better. This was the reason I chose Deloitte- didn't want to be pigeonholed into one market or function.

like

KPMG1- You should give us another try! We have a lot of veterans in both commercial and federal!

In 2 years, I've been on 2 commercial projects but they were remote/part time. I have been on 2 federal projects during this time too, but those projects were my "day job." My next commercial project may be a full time travel one on a FS client for 6 months, just depends on a few things externally. I help out on engagement pursuit efforts and practice development for commercial too. You're right it'd be real tough to do 50/50. Those of us know do both have made it happen through our personal networks. Most folks stick to their primary industry.

If you can't hack up or out Fed is good

D1 what's the fed culture at Deloitte

That's actually a pretty good answer to a question that wasn't really well thought out by me haha. I guess what I was trying to ask was if fed was clearly separate from commercial at Deloitte. I'm fed MC at KPMG and feel that they are very separate from each other.

Contd: i also had an offer from both kpmg and Deloitte when I got out of the army but Deloitte's offer got stuck in some red tape while looking to staff me so I went with KPMG. I figured I'd make an attempt at getting over there at some point.

That's a shame to hear that A2. I know a few folks at AFS. I hate to hear it doesn't have the same culture as ACN.

D1 - how many commercial projects have you been able to work on? Most people in my account are my projects for 1-3 years so there just isn't a lot of switching projects in reality although theoretically it isn't a huge division.

A2 is correct. Stay/be borrowed if you can. If you got a good MD connection, it may be worth it. Otherwise, stay LLP

D1 has some good info. I'd like to say, as someone who has been on both Fed and commercial work, te primary difference is when you do the work and when you network. In commercial, you'll typically work late hours Mon-Thursday and then have a chill Friday with networking. In federal, you work mon-fri so you work less hours per day but an extra full day. Most networking events in Federal will be Tuesday-Thursday as federal leadership prefers to enjoy their weekends with their family rather than have networking events Friday evening (since Friday is a full day for them).
I travel for Federal and do want to warn that travel will make it much harder to maintain a strong network back in DC but it's essential as DC houses all the top PPDs/SMs who eventually will decide your ratings

Never worked with anyone in Fed on the DD side for tech, only know of one project in DC that is a mix for us. Honestly heard a lot of people look down at Fed in commercial because of the reasons mentioned above

Thanks D1!

Hi Fishes,
Need help with a tax query.

I am earning 85k/month now. Thinking to purchase a land of around 15L, not just for investment but to build our own house on it in future.

Though I can somehow manage it without taking a land loan. But I was wondering if I can take some to avail tax benefits.

So my doubts are - Can I avail tax benefits (like home loan) before construction? If I take the loan just to enjoy tax benefits then how much loan should I take at most? Have only ~68k EPF in 80C
