What motivated you to pursue a career change from front line sales to managing a team of sales professionals?

I ask, because as I look to the future I am wondering if just staying on the front lines will be more lucrative then entering management.

Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?

Joining a big firm next week as fully remote lateral and flying out to home office for orientation. The schedule has me in office until 4:15. I’ve already been told I won’t have any actual work. Seeing Cooley do a 180 from fully remote to 3x a week in the office has me insanely grateful that I took a fully remote position while they were available.

I live an hour from my office and I actually go in quite a bit because I like my colleagues a lot, but everyone in my group is across the country so there’s no pressure and I can’t be forced. Thank the lord.

People who don’t submit their time daily, how do you remember what you did and for how long? I’ve always just submitted each timer as soon as I finish a task—“call with x re y” really doesn’t take that long even if I’m busy, and if I don’t do it immediately I’ll forget all those little I did in the morning by the time I go to bed. No shade at all to those with different systems, just genuinely curious because I see a lot about catching up at month end on here and I have no idea how that works??

I’ve made it 5+ years in a NY M&A practice and have consistent exceeding expectations reviews. I’ve had a few mental breakdowns because of work during this time, but thankfully made it through. I’ve been in a near constant depressive/anxious state for family reasons for the last year and half, and am soon having my first kid. I’m scared shitless that I’ll spiral out of control both at work and at home if something doesn’t change soon. Any suggestions on how to keep this job and keep it together?

I sometimes feel like career steps after BL for most associates are organic and less deliberate. But I’m lost with where to go next with my career. Entering fourth year PE M&A associate. Looking for some encouragement. Has anyone here received an overall negative performance review or has been put on a development/performance plan and was able to turn things around for the better?

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.

What can a junior associate do about a mid-level that constantly asks questions about things they were cc’d on, sends dozens of piecemeal emails and is generally just super high strung and needs everything right away?? No other mid-levels I’ve worked with act this way and this individual I’m working with is driving me insane and I’ve spent countless hours attaching emails and saying “as explained in the attached email…”

Stop asking if we can unionize after being asked to work over the weekend.

Thoughts on taking a position in the same practice group and same class as your spouse?
