What is the best way to address a long employment gap in a cover letter so it doesn’t look like I just couldn’t find a job? After passing the bar, I took eighteen months off to help manage a family health crisis and travel a bit. Now that I’m ready to enter the workforce, my inbox is a graveyard of automated rejections. I’m worried that the gap on my resume is a massive red flag for recruiters who think I’ve forgotten everything I learned in school.

Stop cold-applying and start hitting up your law school alumni network for internal referrals. Human beings understand life happens, but a screening algorithm only sees a 1.5-year hole in your timeline.

How much of this was family care and how much of it was travel?

like

OP literally said travel in the original comment lol. And even if they don’t ask about the family sickness they can absolutely ask where they traveled to and for how long. And when are we pretending every law firm or attorney is perfectly EEOC compliant? That’s hilarious.

Can you highlight any relevant experience during or before law school instead of focusing on the gap? I wouldn’t make the gap the sole focus.

Healthcare corporations… please note you have more then 1 shift of workers. You have 3 most times, each shift has to be treated equally. This is and always have been an issue, and you cannot figure out why the other shifts refuse to be active and participate in anything and definitely not engaged anymore.

There’s been some turnover over the last six months at my firm, and I have taken over more files. I’m having a hard time getting ahead of briefing schedules and have been asking for extensions on a lot of recent briefs. In my practice area it’s never really an issue or objected to. However, I feel guilty that this is still happening. Any tips for getting over this?
