A mix works best! In-person builds trust, while calls keep things accessible. Picture it: face-to-face for big talks, quick calls for check-ins. Just telephonic? Feels like texting about life’s hardest stuff—tricky!

A lot of healthcare is incorporating telehealth. It can work as long as there is still reasonable access to the caregiver by the patient or client. And these days, technology has added the ability to phone or text a client and be on-screen at the same time which gives clients the reassurance that they are speaking to a real person, someone who is interested in their welfare, and a familiar face when they might be having a particularly hard day. I see a specialist myself and I reached a point in therapy which has made telehealth possible for me. Three appointments by Facetime and every fourth appointment in the office. And I am free to call his office at any time and request an in-office visit instead of telephone if I feel that I need the in-office visit more at that particular time. Telehealth has saved healthcare personnel and patients/clients time and money, and I don't think it's going to go away any time soon.

I don’t see how it can be effective for substance abusers or addicts/alcoholics. Recovery is the hardest/toughest/most insidious part of the process. The foundation really should be aftercare group therapy for awhile once the client is sober and abstinent. One on one’s are needed ‘at times’ but old behaviors can quickly emerge. Behaviors (manipulating one on one therapist in the ways users have unconsciously mastered) slowly change before a full on relapse. Members of a group in this area, really confront each others bullshit - esp stronger members. I’d add a didactic component; teaching short lessons on what they’re dealing with. I do not believe telehelp is something we should use for anyone struggling with drugs/ alcohol.
It’s like doing an ASD evaluations using Zoom/Teams. Can’t do it. We were asked by a couple parents to do an asd eval in the schools during the pandemic. Our supervisor said, absolutely not. Kind of the same thing.
Telehelp is not going to allow for best practice in every situation, imo
