There are certainly accommodations you could receive if they are reasonable, such as having your own office to focus, flexibility with doctor appointments, the ability to record meetings, receiving written instructions on assignments, and more time for assignments. It’s a recognized disability protected by the laws against discrimination.
You know, I get all of those at my company and sort of take it for granted. Never thought of them as things that would be implemented.
I have ADHD and I get a modified schedule so I start later in the day and work later in the evening. My cube is as far away from the door as it can be with no line of sight to the door and I have a white board near my cube for visual organization. My managers are instructed to give context when scheduling meetings so that I don’t obsess over them leading up to the meeting and I need at least a days notice for a meeting. I’ve also told them that I work best with deadlines so everything I do has a deadline. If I need to contribute to a PowerPoint they need to give me a deadline that is earlier than the presentation’s actual deadline. I will meet the deadline but I will meet it by minutes not hours so an accelerated deadline is necessary if the data needs cleaning or entered into something prior to the presentation.
All really helpful accommodations and it sounds like you work with some great people.
Honestly, I don't know what kind of accommodations I would expect from my company. I have ADHD too, and for me, it's a personal issue. I have to manage my own symptoms.
Hi! I have ADHD, diagnosed in adulthood. Here are the accommodations I have gotten since my diagnosis:
— Project management resources. I have a “taskmaster” who helps me stay on track.
— Increased flexibility in workspace. There is certain work I absolutely cannot do in a busy, noisy office.
— Ability to expense a transcription service for all meetings and an ADHD-specific task and calendar app.
These are wonderful suggestions!
Quiet spaces. A dedicated, distraction free zone can work wonders for focus. Think cozy reading nook, noise canceling headphones, or even a permission slip to work from home when needed.
Love these suggestions!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they would expect you to find ways to cope with your ADHD. Depending on the severity, you have to figure out a structure and routine that works for you. Eliminate as many distractions as possible, stay organized and focused, or if it's severe and difficult to manage, you may need medication.
I don’t believe there are any.
I’ve be diagnosed with ADHD my entire life. TBH, there are no accommodations that would really make a difference.
Really, as stated above, it’s a personal issue. Anything that ADHD would effect would need to adjusted at the personal level (field, position, time management)
Y'all, to be clear any disability can have workplace accommodations. Just because you've had to diminish them throughout your life, please know that there are things that can be done to support you. Check out Jan. They have a database of accomodations that may help you depending on your disability.
Great advice! Thank you.
I think what folks with ADHD are saying is that there is a difference between using it as an excuse and learning to function with it. I would pursue being a legal writing editor, but I’m also in a peak spot with a remote company in a role that isn’t extremely demanding when it comes to attentiveness.
