What kind of trousers are acceptable at workplace - consulting specifically. Shopping after two years for work clothes. Actually never bought casual or business formals for daily work, could wear jeans and top to other workplace before. Thank you

I'd steer clear of wide legged pants, Paperbag waists, and legging type (extra skinny cuts) given it sounds like you're starting from scratch here. Just a basic skinny/straight/slim cut pant depending on what is flattering for your proportions should be fine. Hope this helps! Happy to send a link but also think this might be self-explanatory haha

Original thread OP suggested they owned no work pants and were starting from scratch so I suggested more versatile silhouettes as a starting point, that's all. + A lot of them are in drapey fabrics that don't look as formal.

At EYP and most of my client sites jeans are perfectly acceptable on a day to day basis. Outside of that assuming your workplace is requiring you to dress up I'd look at Loft, Ann Taylor, and Banana as your work clothes entry places to shop. All three often have 40% off sales and do a great job with fit vs. price (I am a petite woman so particularly appreciate the petite/normal/tall segmentation). As a start you could buy 2-3 of black/blue/khaki/patterned slacks at all these places and mix up the accompanying tops / cardigans / blazers. Would definitely start with a black, a blue, a dark wash jean, and a light wash jean

A lot of dorks in this thread!! If you are a person who loves style, easy to make a dramatic wide leg very business appropriate or work jeans into an outfit for client site (my client uniform was straight jeans of all washes with a blazer and an interesting loafer or ankle boot). My blazers are always patterned (I love Veronica beard) for visual interest. It’s about confidence. Do you look confidently put together? That’s more business appropriate than some of the sad cheap stretch slacks I see on other consultants. And I work with pharma!

like

M1 - I love your confidence but OP might need to walk before she can run. She doesn’t have an established work “style” yet so I think starting with basics and then expanding from there is a good approach. Maybe in a few years she’ll be right there with you! But starting with basic black slacks from Ann Taylor would probably be more comfortable for her.

like

I agree that black slim fit or boot cut trousers like from Ann Taylor or Banana Republic are your best place to start. Not too expensive, fairly conservative. Plus they have petites which is a plus for me! (Short girl problems) I agree with others that there is a WIDE range of what is acceptable, but if you want the SAFEST bet to start, then that’s what I would recommend. After you are more comfortable and have assessed the situation better, feel free to go crazy with whatever you feel comfortable with! On that point, I wouldn’t buy more than 1-3 pairs of slacks to start.

like

I think it can depend on the industry and maybe even the client. Healthcare is relatively conservative (no tight pants, closed too shoes), whereas tech may be more casual and edgy.

like

FWIW - I always do skinny slacks bc I feel confident in them (regular slacks always make me feel like I’m 8 wearing my moms clothes) but as long as the overall look is polished that should be fine
(Also worked in a healthcare setting and this was what I wore)

like

Gap and old navy are good for pants as well. The ankle length pants are a good staple, can be dressed up or down

like

Pixie pants are THE best!

Thank you, this helps! Any specific style that should not wear at work? I see so many styles!! :o

My first pair was JCPenney’ Worthington line, i also like their Liz Claiborne line as well (they have for slacks/pants, tops, dresses, and blazers)

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

At what point does the value of a degree fall off? I'm in my early 30s, and have five years of experience, and work on a very theoretically interesting project. I believe I'm on track to promotion in the next year. So, I could put in a year of full time school to check the box off, but I'd be sacrificing hobbies and social life (not to mention cost). Is this FOMO or is there real opportunity here?

Not sure whether to be honest or not in this situation. I have decided that I want to leave my job and do a masters degree. I’m planning to leave my job at the end of June, should I warn my boss now so she can start hiring? I don’t want her to be blindsided by my decision and hiring is very slow at the moment. Plus if they hire someone I can train the transition will be easier? But I don’t want to shoot myself in the foot if they were thinking or giving me a pay rise or promoting me?

I keep reading that JDs are valued in compliance but am wondering if a different graduate program is better for my goals. I already plan to obtain the CAMS certification. Thank you!
