1. Would start massive household budget analysis and cost savings. This includes examining retirement option.
2. Would start updating my resume, checking job boards, and reviewing my network. You are marketable and a desired employee in many other roles, simply because you show up every day, on time, follow rules, and are used to having to continually learn and adapt.
3. Would start looking at summer work to help income flow.
So sorry to hear this. I have been laid off or reduced many times in 35 years. Most were done in the spring but then rescinded by the end of the year. One was a mid-year cut to .8 for a semester which we weathered. However, the last one I knew playing “wait and see” wouldn’t work and spent a summer of hell working in a factory with a lot of overtime. MD HS 1 is right and I landed well and arguably better, reviving and actually extending my career.
I’m not the sensitive type to blow smoke and say not to worry. This is real and you need to prepare for the worst. Unfortunately there will be more anxiety as this moves forward. And even if it does pass, a certain amount a paranoia will likely happen at this time each year. If you escape the axe, plan ways to help and support those that don’t. These are business decisions which are not necessarily related to your skills, professionalism, and love of students. Don’t let this decision ruin that. Keep your options open. If you are a person of faith, lean on it.
You’ve got this!
Remember, that things happen for a reason. Make sure that you’re saving money if you’re not already.
Not sure what state you live in but also remember you can collect unemployment while putting out resumes and interviewing. Look for job fairs too.
Looks like OP is in California, which is where I teach as well. My district has warned of potential layoffs, but they are trying to handle the shrinkage in enrollment by not filling any new openings.
I’m so sorry to hear that. What is the reason they’re giving and/or the selection criteria they’re using?
I would suggest updating your CV because there are great places looking for amazing teachers. Maybe this is your nudge to something incredible.
Well, Well, OOPS!! If you remember it happened in 2011.Governors of red states( that should have been a warning)gave Obama back his Education Funds.Teachers were laid off nation wide. I WAS ONE.700 Senior Citizens were laid off in Houston. We were told to apply for unemployment benefits.?The UEB office said,Be patient with us cuz we don’t know how to deal with teachers.I took out my retirement & lived on it til it was gone. I have had a peice of a job here & there since 2011.I taught for DOD in Germany & in the U. S. ,teaching kids whose parents were active duty military. I thought, I have a decent resume. I will be able to get a new job. In 13 years I lost my home of 13 years where I raised my grands. I lost everything.I have had to live in a homeless shelter because family said, You must have done something wrong & wouldn’t let me stay with them.No one has hired me TEACHING FULL TIME since 2011.I suggest you own a biz & put what you have in annuities or a Life Insurance policy that you can borrow from.Give God 10% of whatever you get so he can keep on blessing you.I will NEVER leave you nor will I EVER forsake you. I am a very PRESENT help says God in CHRIST JESUS,OUR REDEEMERS NAME.Today I live in an extended stay cuz family still thinks I did something wrong. Two unexpected checks totaling $2500 showed up yesterday to help me pay rent .At 74 years old I do have my Social Security. You see,I still don’t have a job & at this point age discrimination is REAL ;but so is my Heavenly Father.Pass it on!May he continue to bless you and keep all of you.
Ask OK or PA. They always know what to do.
Honestly I would be freaking out and probably not sleeping at night. Unfortuantely there isn't goingto be anything you can do because you can't control it. However, I am sorry youa re going through that because I know that is really rough.
