What’s 1-2 things you wish you did earlier in your career that would’ve been beneficial on your way to making and succeeding as a partner?

1. Prioritize experiences I needed to be effective at the next level and beyond over the rat race. Getting here faster is not always a good thing.
2. Recognize that all of my relationships and networking with peers and lower levels matter more than senior execs, because they become senior execs down the road and it’s much easier to build relationships with them vs folks ahead of you.

Too much self reliance and over confidence early on - learn how to be a leader, be a good teammate, build strong teams, earn sponsorship, be humble, have better awareness, follow the market

Are there any specific positions or situations you would have put yourself in that may felt uncomfortable but made you better once you got through them?

Figuring out how to balance “doing the work” versus building your brand. Often, doing the work is heads down, while building your brand (networking) is heads up.

OP The first step is making sure you have a good counselor who can advocate for you and help advise you for the things which will help you stand out. Ultimately you need to be known for “something” — do not make the mistake that many people make of getting spread too thin like peanut butter. Find a niche that seems relevant in the marketplace. Lean into that for your next project roles. Ultimately you wanna be seen as they go to person for whatever that is. Example: “with AI quickly becoming a part of everyone’s job, I want to focus on the change management aspects of enabling the hourly workforce in a factory/ warehouse to be able to leverage AI aspects to perform their jobs better and overcome the fears that AI will put them out of work”

I suggest thinking long term in terms of what you want to do 5-10 years down the road. I chased short term targets and have now painted myself in a smaller corner with a detailed focus area rather than broader knowledge that would benefit me more over the last 10 years of my career.

like

Thanks for sharing, I guess how would you have built the foresight to know you were cornering yourself? Did you ignore signs early on to chase the short term target? Just trying to find the balance with simply not knowing what you don’t know and having foresight to see where the business is going?

I've heard a couple of things about how the partner pension amount @ PwC is determined, both similar in approach.

Both calculations I have heard of result in an annuity paid until death, at which point a surviving spouse (if any) receives the annuity.

The first calculation I have heard is that you get 80% of your highest earning year as a partner (e.g. If your best year was $1M, you'd get $800k as an annuity).

The second calculation I have heard is that they look at your three highest earning years as a partner, and take the second highest and you get 100% of that. (e.g if your three highest earning years were $1M, $800k, and $1.2M, you'd receive $1M as an annuity).

Is ANY of this true, or just all rumor? Any PwC partners that can chime in and explain the pension plan fact for fact? Perhaps with sample numbers?
