For me, the biggest sign was losing all enthusiasm for targets and not feeling any pride after closing deals. When even big wins started to feel hollow, and I dreaded client calls or hitting the same pitch on repeat, I knew I needed a change. I'm still in sales, but mostly as a coach.
I think if the time ever came when I had no desire to progress, that would probably be my sign to move on. There have been periods of that over my career, but only temporarily.
When I start to dread going to work, I know I'm ready for a change. I don't think I'm done with sales yet, but I'm definitely done with my current workplace. However, I experienced something similar when I pivoted from teaching to sales.
There have been times when I wasn't feeling too enthused about my work, but that's probably natural. If you're a professional you're able to pull it together and do the job regardless of what kind of mood you happen to be in. A lot of what we do is a performance anyway. The times when I feel like I'm fed up with it all always pass. And something comes along that makes me enthusiastic again.
This! I've had 4 different white collar careers over the course of my long ass life.
Keep being enthusiastic for work.
