What’s are the levels like at EY beyond Senior Manager? What is the difference between Managing Director and Partner? Is there an expert career track?

There are some variations based on location, legal entity and business unit but for the most part it goes:

Global Chair
Area Managing Partner
Service Line / Industry Group / Practice Lead – (Managing Partners)
Country Managing Partner
Partner (equity)
Partner (non-equity/salaried)
.
Associate Partner
Director
Associate Director/Senior Manager*
Manager
Assistant Manager

*Some practice groups have a fast track route to Partner, allowing candidates to be promoted from Senior Manager to Partner in one move (although it’s not technically a promotion for equity partners, it’s an invitation to resign as an employee and join the partnership with your own investment capital initially).

A ‘Managing Partner’ likely runs a large business unit whereby they have other Partners who report into them. For example, the Managing Partner for Tax in the UK will have Partners responsible for Indirect Tax, Corporation Tax, Intellectual Property etc. reporting into them as the overall Partner responsible for Tax.

This answer does not accurately represent US rank structure.

There are partner/principals (equity owners) and then there’s everyone else

MD is salaried and Partner / Principal is equity owner. Comp is typically 30ish % higher for PP vs MD. There’s no formal difference in roles they can take on but generally PPs tend to do the more senior roles. We’ve also just created a Leader level for tech experts that will be same rank but no details on comp yet.

I’m graduating in December, with a background in environmental economics and policy. Consulting didn’t work out this cycle. Made it to final rounds for Bain and Kearney but in the end didn’t get an offer. I want to recoup and try again, but I’m worried that once I’m out of undergrad the door will be closed to starting in consulting.

What can I do to make this happen? I have friends and connections at Bain and Kearney and the other firms as well, but not sure if it’s feasible now.

So something crazy happened to me last week. I was at the airport, and as usual on call after call. The check in line was going ridiculously slowly and at some point turned threw my hands up in frustration while looking around to find another place to check in. In doing so, I catch the eye of the behind me. He smiles and says something. I just sort of nod and carry on with my call. After that, he keeps trying to talk to me, eventually I got to the check, say bye and leave. At security… tbc

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

Thoughts on Wealth Management as an industry? Offered a role to work under a senior FA and eventually take over the book (~$800M AUM and growing). I’d want to make sure the clients stay through the transition, and I don’t want to join a dying industry. Thoughts and advice?
