As an analyst, I think your experience is much more dependent on where you work more than anything else. But lemme give you what you asked for....
Good: your work more than likely has meaning, like the analysis you do informs decision making and therefore you get proximity to people who are several levels above you.
Bad: the error making threshold is low. The checks in your modeling and in your reporting have to be in place, and they need to be consistent.
Ugly: Because your work has more meaning, and because your work gets scrutinized more, sometimes the work-life balance is absolutely atrocious. There have been plenty of weeks where I have worked 50 to 60 plus hours on changing a model or editing a report because we've made a drastic decision and we need to see how that looks financially.
Okay so essentially what I mean by that is that the amount of support you'll have as an analyst varies depending on how big your company is or what industry you work in.
For example, I work for a medium sized retail company, so a lot of my workload and experience very much depends on how things move as far as revenue is concerned or if we have macroeconomic concerns. Before that, I worked for a really small start up, and thus, I was ALWAYS on go. There wasn't much help either.
It's a great profession, but it can also be exhausting. You must actually have a "roll up your sleeves" mindset. I don't recall ever saying "that's not my job" or "I'm sorry I can't help." I'm continuously handed new challenges while working on a slew of other new ones. Working lengthy hours while learning new software. There is a lot of self-imposed pressure on you to find things out if you don't know what it is!
In short, the pros are the pay and the vast amount of opportunities for career growth. The downside is the long hours (esp. if you lean anyway towards investments or stocks) as well as tedious tasks
More regular tasks and projects. Routine tasks such as weekly payment runs, reconciliations, and the like are common. You need to check the Finance calendar for this. You will have more free time to devote to special initiatives, either on your own initiative or on the initiative of management. The most difficult aspect is selling your concept and gaining the trust of your stakeholders. You will have many disagreements with Sales and Marketing if you work in Commercial.
