Wow, officially jealous! I’m mainly a lit attorney looking to transition, so I’m curious about this sector.

You typically don’t get invited to industry events, screenings, premieres, and non-lawyer parties the way agents and managers do. So if you’re interested in this for the glam factor, there really isn’t much of that with the possible but not always exception of deals you’re principally involved with.

I’ve met most of my colleagues in person at entertainment symposia and during the American Film Market in Santa Monica.

HELP! Company wants me to move to the US for a Remote role - Is this reasonable? Hi, I'm moving through the stages for a Remote US role as a Canadian candidate. They mentioned if I were to be offered, expectation is I'd move to the US. I find this odd as the role is Remote but guess it's legal purposes. Good thing is, this comp also has a Canandian office BUT they said bringing me on through the Canadian office is not smth they do.

Is this reasonable?? How can i best negotiate? Thx!

How can I prepare myself now to be a viable candidate?

Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at my firm prior to passing the bar. Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate. That was 1.5 years ago and I am still in the limbo of juggling my own workload + doing assistant roles for my supervisors. I have also had no increase in pay, which is a huge deal for me. Is this normal in the entertainment world? Any suggestions?

I’m a new patent prosecution associate and unfortunately only just now realized that maybe prosecuting patents isn’t something I want to do long term. I loved copyright (and trademark) in law school, but I have loans to pay off. Should I stick it out in my current role to pay them off before I jump ship to a new practice area or will I be pigeonholed forever to patents if I stay here for 2-3 years?

Anyone know a good auditing firm for music royalties?

like

I need to know if I’ve pigeon-holed myself. I have an undergrad in music business, and got a lot of good experience then. Worked in live events for 4 years before returning to law school, intending to practice in entertainment law (specifically music). Got a summer internship at a boutique entertainment firm, but no offer due to the small market. Moved to a larger market, but I’m not in one of the “hotspots”. I’m in-house currently, and have moved up quickly. (Cont.)

Has anyone been following the progress of “data portability” discussions / legislation? It has been a topic of discussion among retail clients who need to comply with privacy laws like GDPR and CCPA.

Still learning the music business but have been in it for past few years. Built great relationships with a lot of artists at labels - i don’t have a law degree but would it be possible to partner with an attorney and source deals for them in exchange for a commission?

I’m interested in learning about people’s paths to working in the industry - have most people done law adjacent jobs to get to where they are today? Thanks in advance!

General question, and I suspect the answer is no. Are there any employment or exec comp-related jobs in the entertainment industry? Or, are there any law firms purely focused on entertainment that have a comp/employment/benefits group? I’m at a large firm with a lot of high profile artists, but I’d like to narrow my practice down to entertainment.
