What’s something that seemed critically important early in your career but matters much less to you now? For me, being the smartest person in the room has become a lot less important than being part of a strong team.

Early in my career I used to think that becoming a manager with direct reports was the be all, end all. I don’t think that anymore and have instead come to believe that 1) far too many people are encouraged to go into management and 2) there needs to be more structure around ensuring the best people get selected and trained for the managerial path.

How does a sole engineer at a company go about getting management to actually care how production machines run? I’m the only mechanical engineer at my company dealing with a half dozen cranky production managers who think that I can “work my magic” on a machine.
