I believe PwC 1 is saying that comparing Strategy& to Deloitte or PwC is comparing apples to oranges. I’d tend to agree.
The typical S& consultant is wicked smart, type A , and (for the most part) makes their career one of the major focuses of their life and are willing to work extraordinarily hard to advance in it. 60+ hours a week is an expectation.
And I’m not trying to make a value judgment, I think there’s a lot to be said for PwC and Deloitte, but sometimes I’ll see PwC people complaining about working past 10pm or on a Sunday, or worrying about issues like whether to expense a meal at a home airport, and realize that we really are quite different.
Sounds like the poorest of poor leadership who have no idea how to plan projects that avoid burnout.
When I hear about people being pushed like that on the regular, I feel like those people are day laborers in business attire.
it scares me that there are people that think working past 10pm or on a Sunday is no big deal. I am fine with being different from that
I don’t mind it either. I learn a ton in the process early on in my career and my knowledge rivals that of a PwC non-SME Director at the SA level.
Plus, if I owned a business or worked in PE (my two other options), I’d work more than I do now.
OP, what practice are you looking into? That makes a huge difference. For example, as A1 anticipated, I for one have had a great time at the firm, have learned an exceptional amount, and love the ~20 people I frequently work with in my practice.
Overall I’d say there just isn’t much of an overall S& culture, beyond “we hire smart people who work hard.” But there are some incredibly vibrant and productive practice-level cultures that can make up for that.
Not all S& resources work absurd hours though (just a counterpoint to the three of us that are posting that do)
I believe this has been covered over and over again, so I’d search posts on FB. Then go to glass door and check those out. Overall, I’ve had friends there that left after a year due to serious cultural issues and the fact PWC has crippled what once was a strong brand. I assume you’ll have some S& folks come talk about how things have changed over the past few years, or that it hasn’t been their experience. Even with that, based on all the information I’ve received, I’d never make that switch.
P1, which one?
S&1, do you think lateral hires from D are successsful at your firm or do you think the discrepancies mentioned above cause difficulty?
@D1 not at all, I’ve seen plenty of lateral hires perform well, as long as they know what they’re getting themselves into.
