10 days - 8 years ago; I’m not sure I can take that much time off now though.
I can barely take a day without someone mad at me
2 weeks. I’ve had coworkers do 3-4 weeks but I actually just don’t want to be away from home that long.
Take your PTO. I promise you you’re not that important. I’ve seen partners, C-Suite execs, legal counsel on active litigations, etc. take 2 weeks off and hardly anyone even notices they were gone. If you don’t think you’re capable of doing so you’re either a) full of yourself or b) a bad leader who hasn’t developed the people beneath you
Obviously, you need to be strategic and not plan your trips around major deadlines and such
Exactly. Build teams to support when you’re out and set the example of letting those beneath you to take the time themselves.
At a certain level you fly with your work if there is a risk of interruption but while I’ve flown a few times with a laptop, I set boundaries that I’m not opening it unless it’s truly needed. That has limited to maybe once or twice ever.
5.5 weeks
Two weeks, and I was actually off grid and unplugged. But that was in public and I had coverage.
I couldn’t do that now. I take two weeks now but every day has about half a day of remote work while I’m gone.
A senior manager I worked with took 5 weeks (during Christmas break) without any repercussions. But when I asked to take a week off last summer (a slower time for us traditionally) after working ~60 hrs weeks since Feb I was told I may need to hope on and work still on vacation. So I left the country for vacation in a completely opposite time zone to avoid being pressured to work for just one week.
Senior Associate and I am taking 3 weeks off in July (1 of those weeks is firm shutdown). Have only taken 4 days of PTO YTD, so definitely taking advantage of time off. I need it. The clients I am working on we aren’t in the field during these 3 weeks, so not concerned about stepping away. However, put this PTO in my schedule about a year ago to make sure I get time to reset (usually slammed during rest of the year). They can figure it out without me
Just came back from three weeks off. Do two weeks a couple times a year and some years I do longer when the locale warrants it.
I've taken a 3 week vacations every year for the past 3 years. It's amazing and I've gotten to travel internationally. You should be more like your coworker. When you're old, you won't regret traveling more - but you might regret not doing it.
Between finishing grad school and starting my new role then was almost 3 months. It was great.
When I go to my home country, I take 3-4 weeks off - it doesn’t make sense otherwise because of the jet lag. I generally do not work when I am there.
3.5 weeks
I know someone who took a full month off. They’re still employed
Took a 3 month sabbatical earlier this year.
3 weeks.. but then I extended it by a week and just let my manager know! 4 weeks in total, no issues at all, and absolutely still had plenty of work to get on with when I got back!
I have taken max 2 weeks, but never able to fully disconnect.
Your colleague may have had an optional surgery and needed the recovery time, or possibly just needed a serious break due to burnout or other personal reasons. It happens.
I took a month for my SM promotion sabbatical. Many others did the same.
A three week vacation sounds amazing. However, I would never be able to disconnect that long. I can barely take a three day vacation without checking in.
I took a 3 week tour overseas. We planned it a couple of years in advance, so it was known well before the actual time off. Three years later, did another 3 week tour. Again, planned well in advance. I want to travel while I'm still young enough to really enjoy it. I definitely plan on taking 2-3 weeks vacations in the future.
1 year but I was moving from HI to the mainland and was deciding where to live and where would be the best place to work.
Consecutive calendar days: 17 as a finance analyst (week off company wide). 16 for honeymoon as a Sr. Manager. 16 as a Director but worked three days in a row. Next longest as Director 12 days (week off company wide). Counts include the day I flew out, usually Friday afternoon / evening.
If you have been with a company for a long time, built trust, high performer, etc., don’t hesitate to ask for two weeks off. Most management concerns can be talked off with careful planning.
I had a colleague pass recently nearing retirement. I’m fortunate to have seen 30+ countries but it gave me a reminder of that life is too short. Take the trip!
