My biggest regret from a salary negotiation is that I didn't negotiate at all. When I came into the company I really needed a job and I was so happy to get in the door I didn't want to rock the boat. I just accepted the offer, and, looking back, I'm sure I could have gotten some more. Over time things have worked out well, but I suspect I was often under-earning just because I started out lower than I should have.

Yeah, I totally get that. It’s one of those things that feels obvious in hindsight but is so hard in the moment; especially when you’re just relieved to have an offer and don’t want to jeopardize it. A lot of people (myself included, if I’m being honest) have been in exactly that spot: “I need this job, I like the company, let’s not mess it up.”
The tough part is that starting salary really does set the baseline for future raises, bonuses, and even equity in some cases. It compounds over time, so that initial “I’ll just take it” can quietly cost you a surprising amount down the road.
The good news is that once you’re inside and proving your value, there are still ways to correct course whether it’s during performance reviews, when you take on bigger responsibilities, or when you get a competing offer later on. It’s never too late to start advocating for yourself, even if the first chance slipped by.
I wouldn’t have negotiated for as much as I did. With the higher salary came a lot of responsibilities that were not a part of the original scope.
That is a perfect comparison! Looked amazing until I actually started the work. The silver lining is that I am at least paid decently for it and not the opposite of more work and less money.
