I used to go to them just so I would be perceived as a team player. It’s over an hour drive home for me, so at this point I just say No. If team building is so important they should schedule it during work hours or I ain’t going.
“Thanks for the invite, but I’m not able to join.” The more info you offer, the more you invite people to challenge your reasoning. As my colleague above notes, NO is a complete sentence.
