Since no one is giving you a serious answer… This works if you know someone at the agency: “Referred by [name of referral]” — just make sure you have their permission to use their name.
Do some interweb sleuthing to find out what accounts they’re working on, unless you already know, and reference brand name in the subject line and your role for consideration.
Personally, I rarely respond in a timely manner to cold emails, purely due to a flooded inbox related to work and current deliverables most of the time. I always flag these messages from creatives for follow-up. But unless I’m actually in need of (and have budget approval for) freelancers or full-time hires, those emails are not a top priority. Again, because of volume of work.
IMO the best strategy is to not limit your outreach to the CD - but also definitely email the talent resource person at the agency as well. The CD you’re emailing may not be hiring, but chances are that another one in the agency is (assuming it’s a bigger shop).
The sad reality is that I’m having to do MUCH more with a smaller team. It’s also expected that I get very hands-on in the day-to-day deliverables to ensure deadlines aren’t missed, because my small team can’t do everything. I have to go through hoops to bring on additional support, and am usually told I should be able to handle it (the subtext being, stop being lazy). The only people not sweating it are those in the c-suite and executive level.
Good luck out there - it’s an employer’s market right now, and agencies are milking it for everything’s worth. Genuinely have no idea when it’s going to turn around.
