When did you feel like you earned your first Rolex?

Earn? It’s a material possession and not a Olympic gold medal. To imply you need to earn a Rolex means you need an accomplishment to be worthy. You’re always worthy of a Rolex or anything you want. The cost aspect is different. I wouldn’t buy a Rolex until I had the excess money over my expenses / savings goals.

If you can't afford 2 you can't buy 1.

By afford I mean more of the you won't miss the money when it's gone, than you have the money in the bank.

I didn’t have enough money to buy two Daytonas (steel) when I bought mine, but as soon as I bought it I had enough money to buy two and a couple grand left over. If you’re buying a Rolex as an investment, this advice is useless. If you’re buying a Datejust with a mother of pearl dial, heed this advice...

In my opinion I feel like buying a luxury watch (or even luxury items) should be linked with a life milestone — considering the fact you have the liquidity to reasonably afford one.

I like having sentimental value attached with such purchases to have a more meaningful effect.

I am saving and waiting patiently before I make my first Rolex purchase (an Explorer 36mm) after I hit two financial/career milestones: net worth of over $100k and salary of over $100k. Was a first gen college student and about to wrap up my first year working... almost there!

like

I generally agree with that sentiment, but wrt Rolex by the time you get the one you want the moment has long gone. For that reason I actually value my Omega more than any of the Rolexes I have

When I started making more money on my crypto than I did with my salary + bonus.

Out of the womb.

But probably when I got promoted to manager. I have my eyes on a Daytona. Maybe when I get to principal I’ll treat myself

like

Haha I’m sure you’ll have your Daytona soon.

The presi is what I’m glued on and it’s gonna make it’s way to my wrist soon. So elegant.

Unsure how quantify earning something that you are purchasing for vanity. For me, I budget very anally and have disposable income set aside every month. As that grows, I’m able to buy things and toys I want but don’t need.
To celebrate life’s milestones, I prefer buying things for other people over myself

Never really? It’s a luxury good not a necessity I buy one when I feel like I want one and can afford it

Every luxury watch I've purchased is associated with a career or personal milestone. I see those purchases as a reward for my hard work, earning everyone.

like

When I got hired at my most recent position. Honestly though, it's just a watch. I'd have bought one anyway. Buying a watch I like and can afford shouldn't require an occasion.

This is another example of the stigma attached to Rolex, a status symbol that some people associate with wealth and success. But I would agree with M1 and P1’s comments.

I am not disagreeing, just wanted to point something out. heck, I have 3 Rolexes, but I bought them way after I got into horology and learned to appreciate the fine craftsmanship of Rolex. It wasn’t like, oh I am making xx and therefore I need to get myself a Rolex to show it. Unfortunately for the brand, a lot of people who know nothing about watches think that way, and it isn’t with other brands. Your original post could have been when do you think you deserve a Omega, JLC, or a Patek, but of course it was about Rolex. 😀

When I turned 16

I “bought” my first Rolex when I was 18yrs old. I have two family members who were each given a Rolex after 25 years of service at their respective places of employment. They may have earned theirs but I hustled and worked two jobs to get mine when I didn’t know anything watches, just knew I had to get one. I just made it into my 50’s and it still “sweeps” around like a dream! Nothing like that Rolex.

I once asked a colleague at a radio company how much he's paid monthly, and he outright refused to tell me. In fact, he found it very odd that I asked. I later learned that he was making double my salary. I know it's not an employee's job to fix pay inequity by sharing their salary figures, but I'm still of the opinion that it helps uncover pay gaps. But do you think it's wise to do so at the risk of damaging your work environment or the whole thing backfiring on you? Thoughts are welcome.
