I knew I needed to quit many years before I actually did, that's just how alcoholism works in my experience. People that don't have a problem don't ask this question, and every single alcoholic that I know had to have life get pretty bad before finally conceding to get help.
If you have little or no control over how many and/or how often, it might be a good idea to.sit through a few meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous and see if you identify with anything being said. It's not a cult, the doors don't lock, and many of us are super friendly and there's zero judgment in the room.

“Need to stop” and “want to stop” are two different things. And for me, I actually didn’t want to stop at all…I just wanted to control it and to stop having consequences.
It took me stumbling into AA pretty much by accident to hear what I needed to hear, and then it took me sticking around to be convinced that I am indeed an alcoholic (i.e. I often can’t stop after I’ve started, an no matter how bad it got, I always started again). Once I understood what it meant to be an alcoholic I started to believe that AA was the best possible solution. Thankfully, for me, that’s proven to be true. I’ve been sober 7+ years and my life is so much better. It was a big change and it wasn’t easy, but I didn’t have to do it alone.
This is what I needed to see
When you ask this question.
As they say, when you are sick and tired of being sick and tired.
I knew I needed to stop drinking when I was 20 and couldnt go to class sober. I didn't want to stop drinking til I was 34, suicidal, and had damaged most of the relationships in my life.
Mine was very similar to this. I knew it was a problem in college, but was in denial until my mid 40s. I actually had to relapse 43 days after completing an outpatient rehab before my ego had no arguments left.
