At one point, a very long time ago, SEO was about keywords. That was already fading out when Google's Panda Update conclusively ended that era. It does keep evolving, and while there are technical things that can help in terms of site architecture and page formatting, I think the key is to just produce high quality content. The crawlers will find it and they're capable now of assessing its value. Of course, we're already in an era with Google's AI results that will really scramble things.
